I think the WISE thing to do is like I do. I hunt the parts of the season I feel is best, then I DONT hunt the rest of it. Jeez, just because the season is 4 months long doesnt mean you HAVE to hunt 4 months. You guys need the dang state to tell you when to go? really? I dont want or need anymore laws, confusing regulations and seasons. If your deer dont rut until Late Jan then I wouldnt hunt until late Jan or very rarely until then to not pressure them. Id instead go to a spot in the state they are rutting. I just got more land in Marion county. Why? because our rut dies around xmas and it is pretty dead up here. But in Marion County its just getting going. So now Ill be able to hunt a different rut in a different area. Pretty simple and no new laws needed. My opinion on shortening the season is preservation of our already declining deer herd, nothing to do with the fact that I do or don't want to hunt 4 months. Most guys on this site have the same interest, but I believe Alabama hunters as a whole do not. Seems like more and more are outlaws that just wanna kill something (anything). A shorter season is about the only way to help curb that. By pushing the season out to the end of Feb in North AL only gives them more days to legally continue the slaughter.

Again, a local problem for your area. We killed 30 does this year and there won't be a noticeable difference next year. Once again, all areas are different. You can't speak for all regions of the state.

At what point have I spoke for all regions of the state? Go ahead, I'll wait.
Right, I haven't. More than once I have said that all areas are different and need different management (dates), but the state as a whole has the same problem from one corner to the other with outlaws, folks that ain't gonna report, ain't gonna follow laws, whatever just because well that's the way it's always been. I'd wager Alabama has the biggest population of hunting outlaws in the nation. It's obvious the GW can't do anything about it, it's too widespread.
Im happy for you to have a deer population that allows a large doe harvest with no ill effects, but fact remains "most" of the state don't. Consider yourself blessed.

that remind me of politicians when they want to raise taxes for the "schools and the children".
I read a FB post last night where a guy went to GSP, saw a buck chasing a doe and now he wants deer season extended. That line of thinking parallels the politicians when I ask "how much is enough?" If the politicians had every cent, every dollar and all other treasure they'd still want more "for the children". Now it's spreading to hunters. How much deer season is enough? another month? 2 months? All year? And what after that? Night hunting too? If a stupidfucking hunter can't kill a deer in Alabama under the current season length they need to QUIT HUNTING. Period! Is there no limit to stupidity in humans? I saw that post,I agree with you 100%...theres plenty of stupid running around

Jeez, just because the season is 4 months long doesnt mean you HAVE to hunt 4 months. For me, it does........If season is open, I can't not go. Heck, if the weather is iffy and I decide to sit it out, I beat myself up over it and feel bad, even when sitting it out was the right decision. It just eats at me.

Seems to me you are talking about the state in this quote. Congrats on having numerous places to hunt. Most don't.

As has been stated here in this thread many times, some (few) places can handle a 4 month deer season with a 3 buck and unlimited doe harvest and not have a negative impact on the years to come. BUT alot of areas can't and the only way to curb it is restrict/limit harvest numbers or shorten the season. Either way the hunting community as a whole in this state aint gonna accept it.

I dont even like to hunt mature bucks much UNTIL the rut. I dont pressure deer, especially mature bucks. They are slick.
You go in early archery for a few days to a week to catch them still on feed patterns, early muzzle loader a few days, gun opener a few days then back out until the rut and let them load up on ya, feel safe, get on hot does and go get one is what I have found WORKS. ...............
More big bucks are shot during the rut then any other time..period. They are following there Dicks not their senses. Running around in daylight when they are mostly nocturnal. Pretty simple.
Just my opinion but its worked pretty well for me throughout my long years of hunting them.
Again just my opinion.
I liked all of ODO post but shortened it to the above parts to save space. Good post ODO. ************* I think the "answer" to some issues that people are bring up is smaller bag limits for does vs. a shorter season, although it looks like the northern one third really didn't need an extension into February in terms of rut hutting.

I wish to goodness that it still ended January 31st.
No reason for it to be all the way into February. There is no reason it should start on Oct 15. Start it on Nov 15 and run till the 1st of March.......

Seriously, with all due respect.
you people that have never and will never hunt south Alabama, still have no clue what you’re talking about when it comes to season dates in the southern part of the state.
Ding Ding we have a winner!

Seriously curious: why do y'all need the peak rut "excitement" to enjoy hunting deer?
It's interesting, too, that Florida's D-zone goes through the end of the month. Bama's southernmost counties probably could do the same?
Coming from a person that hunts in a location that the rut has always been during the season. So seriously curious: do you quit hunting when the rut comes in or are you just a hypocrite for hunting when it is "easier" or " more exciting"?

Reading thru this post I have come to one conclusion. I agree with what Wiley said in his original post, when is enough , enough. But, it it made think of one thing. Just because a buck is running behind a doe does not mean she is ready to breed. Maybe he is running her azz off for some reason. Maybe he's pissed at her, do you See where I am going? People often jump to conclusions that aren't true. If they could and it meant more money to DCNR , they just might make the season longer. I don't think the deer or the hunters are their prime concern. It's all about the money and looking good for the politicians that happen to be in power at the time.
It's not how much money you make, but how much you can keep.

Heat of October, full moon, rainstorms, cold, rut, post-rut, whenever. I don't need to or have to hunt during "the rut" when bucks are chasing, have let their guard down and are at their absolute easiest to kill to be able to enjoy the season. I go when I can because I enjoy hunting. And where I hunt, the peak rut and breeding hasn't occurred yet.

What do you hunt in South Florida because according the State everywhere is past peak rut at this point. I hunt when it is most effective to kill a mature buck because i get no enjoyment from shooting does, yearlings or young bucks, but that just me and I don't hold that against those that do. I enjoy being outdoors and spend more time in the woods than most I just don't spend it looking at a food plot or sitting in a tree when it is not an effective time to do it for my goals. I find it funny that you rail against a mentality that you and others in your profession created honestly.

I don't hunt in south Florida. I would, because it's pretty cool with deer and hogs and gators and snakes and birds, but I don't.
If your goals are to kill a buck and doing it during peak rut chasing is the best time because out of four months it's the easiest since they're at their least perceptive time of the year and stupid for poontang, that's cool. Knock yourself out. Congrats.
Also, I'm not "railing" against anyone. You want to hunt the easiest time of the season when the big, mature wary smart buck is so stupid because of sex that its guard is completely down? No problem. I enjoy hunting all season. Takes all kinds.

Additionally, I'd be in favor of the southernmost counties starting later and ending at the end of February if that would help y'all.
I personally don't care when you hunt or how long you hunt or if you chase the easiest bucks during "the rut" or what. The one-size-fits clearly doesn't help you guys.
So if your zone-counties needed to open later and close Feb. 28 like the Panhandle Zone D season, that'd be great for y'all.

I never have really understood some of the arguments being made in these threads….especially when everyone is talking about “no biological reason for having the season open through Feb 10 in the north”……as if the deer just being in rut makes it a sound biological reason for why its ok in the south. I would think that the only things that really matter are sustainable yield and total harvest……How many deer are being killed and can the herd sustain that harvest annually into perpetuity. Season dates and all the rest of it is just means to control how many get killed. Are too many bucks being killed in north Alabama now as a result of the Feb extension?? Isn’t that what matter and not whether or not the peak rut has passed? Maybe I’m just looking at it all wrong.
Folks that know don't shoot old does........
