I have been hunting the Henry/Barbour line for 3 years now and it seems the rut is about 2 weeks early this year. Is any body else in the area noticing this?

I have seen a lot of bucks chasing does in the daytime in Barbour County but no mature buck sightings yet. Lots of scrape activity in Henry but I haven't seen any deer at all in the daylight. Trailcams are lit up with nighttime pictures.

West Central Barbour. Week old scrapes, bucks beginning to walk. One basket rack 8 pushing two does this past Sat. My guess is that it will hit around Robert E Lee/MLK weekend.

I hunt two properties in between Headland and Columbia, and 1 a few miles west of Newville. The places I hunt east of Headland seem to be in full swing Dec. 25th through today. Looking at the past few years, my place west of Newville won't get good until around the 18th or 20th. Sounds crazy but its almost like 431 separates the deer including the rut. A couple of guys at work who have hunted the area for a long time swear by it. Not sure about going north into barbour county.

Hunting the Henry/Barbour line near Clayton and our rut is always the best the week of Martin Luther king day, give or take a few days.

Moved out of state just after last season. Got down to the farm just before Christmas, put cameras out. Was able to drive back down there to pull cards on the 5th of Jan and all SD cards full, lots of bucks moving day and night, few videos of some younger bucks grunting and pushing does. Headed to the farm in the morning to hunt 5 straight days...hope it’s on. This is the only hunting I’ll get the whole season.

I hope this cold snap will kick em off again because they’ve been nocturnal for the past 2 weeks. Plus the moon will be right this week also

Hunted Henry County along County Road 57 this morning and we saw young bucks tending scrapes and hound dogging does. Looks like these next few days, especially when the cold front moves in, will be good. Had a young 7 point in food plot right at daybreak making scrapes along side of the field and then checking does in the field. Hunting partner had a six point working a dirt road about this same time as well.

Heard more grunts in the woods today than I’ve heard in years of hunting total. Heard plenty of chasing. Hunted in thickkk pines and saw one pretty good 8. All in less than an hour after work.

I hunted hard for 4 days through this past weekend just south of Abbeville on the East side of 431. Mornings had plenty of movement Saturday and Sunday. Younger bucks moving with their nose to the ground trailing doe that had come through, but the ladies didn’t seem to be hot just yet to draw the bigger bucks up on their feet. Evening hunts were dead with only a few doe moving to feed right at dark. Was so looking forward to that cold front coming in on Sunday to kick things into gear, but our deer just shut down as the temp dropped through Sunday and Monday.

Mlk weekend is the deer hunting version of the Fourth of July at the beach. I have never heard my neighbors shoot before and they really lit it up. I have only seen one mature deer chasing and it was on Jan 5th.
