Well, Kansas was EXTREMELY good to me today. I arrived yesterday evening, met my friend, and we viewed several aerial photos and discussed wind direction, etc. The weather up here wasn't looking good for the last part of the week and weekend, and we thought today may be the only good day to hunt. We entered the woods this morning, surrounded by cut beans and corn, and bumped a buck chasing a doe in the moonlight at 5:30. As they were running off he was still grunting, seemingly unphased by the fact we just walked through. At day break I had a doe come in downwind and bust me. Half an hour later she came back, with her buck fawn, and completely circled my stand, ending up right beneath me. After she had satisfied her curiosity she walked down a trail on the edge of a large drainage with very steep slopes on both sides. It was pretty quiet until 8:55 when I caught movement coming back down that same trail, but this time the doe was coming to me. Forty yards behind her was the largest whitetailed buck I have ever seen. I began questioning whether this was really happening, or if I was so tired I had actually fallen asleep in the stand and was dreaming...lol. I immediately thought he was a gross 170" when I saw the right side. Once he turned I realized he didn't have the matching G3, but at this point it didn't matter. I had refocused on making this once of a lifetime opportunity actually happen, by making sure an arrow went though his vitals. I immediately took my attention off of him and started following the doe, and trying to predict where she was going to end up, because he was taking every step she took. She crossed less than 10 yards under my tree. At 8:57 I found myself at full draw, on the buck of my dreams, and he was only 10 yards.......broadside. I settled the pin and let it fly. As soon as he bucked I knew it was a good hit, and I was watching blood spew every time his feet hit the ground. He stopped at 30 yards and stood still. By then I had already knocked another arrow and decided I would let him have it too, knowing good and well the first one found it's mark. There was no way I was going to let him get away if I could do anything about it. Second arrow punctured both lungs and exited the off shoulder. He made it all of 20 yards before crashing to the ground. I still can't express how I feel in words. It is amazing, and truly blessed to have the opprtunity. He dressed out at 190 lbs. The guy I'm hunting with has been telling me this was a 170" buck all day, and I didn'yt believe him until I put the tape to him. I actually took the time to get my cable and B&C tapes......result, gross 172 non-typical, net 163 non-typical. Truly an amazing trip. Just hate it didn't last any longer. I am very blessed, and God has been great.

Great buck Matt. There is nothing like hunting the mid-west in the rut. I hunt Illinois every year and was fortunate enough to take my best buck with a bow last week at 150". Maybe a gross booner for me next year. That's the reason I go back every year.
