The OP is probably remembering fox sqwerls. I've seen less and less of them. I have a solid black one in the freezer I picked up off of the dirt road that goes to molettes bend from CR2 in Dallas County a few years back. Those northern red sqwerls are bigger than the grey ones, but not as big as a fox sqwerl.

I don't think I've ever saw a red squirrel but we have a bunch of fox squirrels here. I bet there's at least 6 right around my driveway and a bunch down the fence rows on farm. I killed a couple flying ones last year

I used to be a squirrel guru as a kid, like most I cut my teeth hunting them. In south Alabama I have seen, gray (cat), fox, chipmunk (ground), and flying. Never seen a red squirrel. A quick Google search shows that y'all in north Alabama are at the extreme southern part of thier range, learn something new everyday on here! As to why you are seeing less of them, my google search said grey squirrels can carry a disease which will hurt only the red squirrels. Also the grey squirrels will out compete reds for food.

We have a pretty good population of Fox Squirrels on my Lease. All kind of different colors.
Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Red squirrels are not a native species to Alabama. Fox squirrel, Eastern Gray Squirrel, and the Southern Flying Squirrel are the only three species of squirrels. The fox squirrel is the only native squirrel in alabama. the grey squirrel is from europe and has been slowly taking over. I try to kill all the grey ones I see and leave the fox squirrels alone

That's i interesting. kind of surprised reds taking a backseat to grays. Those things are mean as hell and tough to eat. You have to kill 2 for the meat of 1 gray.

Eastern grey squirrels are native to the eastern United States....... which includes Alabama. They are classified as an invasive species in parts of Europe. You got it backwards

I have seen the ones you are talking about in Canada on a canoe trip. Not sure I’ve ever seen one in Alabama. Yes they are smaller than the gray. Have also seen them in the smokies

Be glad you don't have any of the little bastards around. They are the worst squirrels about chewing stuff up. They get into everything. My neighbor had some chew a hole thru his garage wall to get to his dogfood. I have seen them attacking and eating baby robins in their nest too. They chew electric wires and will raise hell if they ever get into your attic.

Never been any red squirrels in Al. Fox squirrels come in grey, red, and black. Have seen hundreds of red squirrels out west. They aint really red like a red fox, they look like a small grey squirrel.

Damn, after reading this thread, they're some people who can't read, can't follow along, and apparently i'm afraid of them being in the same woods with me, toting a gun. I'm 56 and have never seen a red squirrel. Thousands of fox and gray squirrels. Fox squirrels like a natural mix of hardwood and pine. In other words, woods that man hasn't messed with.

I didn't see a fox skwerl in Alabama until the late 90's and was so amazed to see them. I didn't tell anyone about them for years because I knew somebody would go in there with the purpose of killing them
My Dad told me about killing fox skwerls and pine martins when he was a kid

Been fox squirrels in Henry County since forever. Here they are mostly grey with black face. I have seen the grey ones, solid black, and red ones in west Al.

My Dad told me about killing fox skwerls and pine martins when he was a kid deadeye, our stories are similar. Hunted squirrels and rabbits exclusively up to adulthood. The first fox squirrel I ever saw was in the mid 80's in a Blount county river bottom. I had to do a double take at what in the hell it was. He was slightly larger than what I'm used to seeing and had a orange'ish color with a white face. Craziest looking thing I'd ever seen. I ended up mounting him. On a different note, I did notice some of the rules and regs now call out the fox squirrel by name, at least in Bankhead NF. You can not shoot fox squirrels in the months of February and March in the forest. I deer hunted the forest today and could have shot a sack full of grays.
