Looking for another engine for my 88 chevy silverado. It currently has the 5.7 tbi. Figured I would try here before looking to rebuild. Thanks, Chris

Just buy a crate motor from GM and put it in yourself. Hard to beat the price and warranty. Plus if anything goes wrong with it you can take it to any dealer in the country for repairs

Did you have a failure in the old one or is it just tired? If it's just tired you may could get by with a bearing and ring job, freshen up the heads, etc, but much beyond that you will be cheaper with a crate motor. I put a new 5.7 with 4 bolt mains in my 2000 Z71 Tahoe for about $2200. The TBI motors are cheaper by several hundred if I recall. I do believe the warranty states that it much be installed by GM for the warranty to count.

I don't think the TBI motors were prone to cracking head like the Vortecs, but proceed with caution with used motors. You have no idea what work has been done(and most likely cheaply and poorly) inside of the motor by Cooter and the boys.

It overheated and wouldn't start. Then when I did get it started it had the white smoke and rough running.I havent taken alot of time to look at it yet. I guess I will see how severe it is before I proceed. I would rather have a new motor then rebuild if it's close to the same price. I will check on some prices. It would be nice to to drop another right in though. Thanks for the input.

Yep I’d just put another motor in. Jegs has a TBI motor and install kit for about $1600. If it ran hot youll probably have wayyyy more in machine work and parts to make It right. If you want to sell the old motor, I may be interested. Got a 94 Blazer that needs a freshening.
