So, I know this is a taboo topic in the farming world probably. But from what I understand, any corn that is grown from round up ready corn, then also inherits it's round up ready properties. If you are just planting corn for the deer as a summer plot, not planning on harvesting, why not just plant deer corn instead of the high dollar bags of RR? Does it work like this?

for the same reason farmers plant roundup ready...so you can spray round up over the top to kill competing weeds and not damage the corn.

what alagator is talking about is saving harvested roundup ready corn to replant, without paying the fees per bag. had a farmer try that with cotton, here, and got his azz handed to him by (now) bayer/Monsanto.

Monsanto doesn't even exist in the same capacity as they did back in 2013 when they were suing everyone. And I doubt they are coming after little ol' peons like me that are planting a couple of acres for deer.

And also, once I buy that bag of deer corn at the coop (that was 95% chance came from RR planted corn), it's my bag to do with whatever I want. I'm not buying RR corn, planting it and then using my own harvest to re-plant it like the folks in the article or that cotton farmer you are talking about did.

I guess my question was really more of - does it work like that, will that deer corn actually be RR if it was grown from RR originally? I'm not really worried about Monsanto coming after me and I don't think there is anything they can do about me buying a bag of corn at the coop and doing with it what I please. Not like I'm signing something that says I will only be using it as feed.

I have broadcast some bags to whole corn I bought at the co-op to see what would happen. It didn't come up very good at all. I planted it right next to where I planted round up ready seed corn and the results were very different. Now, it is so much cheaper, I guess you could way over seed it if you were broadcasting and not using a planter. But, I don't think you are going to find it very successful.

The ears will be tiny. 99% of the stand will be roundup resistant. Won't produce enough to justify the effort.

257 is correct. Seed corn that is bought for planting is a F1 hybrid. The corn you buy to feed the deer is an F2. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/F1_hybrid

"licensed" product is just that -- in order to re-use it, you have be licensed to do it ... i'm not a lawyer, altho i play one on TV -- but i imagine some form of what i've just said is where the "gotcha" is ... i could be wrong about this, but being in product licensing/sales/marketing for as long as i've been, i'd imagine some form of this exists, even in the farming/ag world ... SIMILAR TO: a sweet lil lady over here in Northport was making THE CUTEST Alabama logo'ed cupcakes & cookies & the Alabama athletics department would order TONS from her ... next thing you know, she got a letter about how much she owed the licensing department based on sales of her "illegally logo'ed", unlicensed product ... if she'd just made her cupcakes & cookies in her kitchen (not for sale) & her family/friends ate them, she'd still be in violation & could be pursued -- but no harm, no foul ... products "owned" by big companies are tricky ... if i was bent on planting corn, i'd just buy the crap "allowed" for planting & be done with it ...
