I've got a hunt scheduled for opening weekend in Wyoming for a few days then heading over to SD and it looks like they are about to get smashed with some snow out there tonight with it carrying on for a few days.

With it being my first time to hunt Merriams, has anyone out there hunted in these less than desirable (for a Alabama raised, Ga resident) conditions?

Thanks

I've already got two buddies going that are more worried than anything with how the birds will act and travelling. Our main concern is getting from Rapid City to Hullett... I realize the road conditions may be a good bit different than when in snows/ices down here, just honestly never driven out west like this. Only ever been out there skiing when it was cold and we had a shuttle taking us where we needed to go.

Just keep an eye on the states road conditions (state dot maps). Unless you're traveling through the storm or directly behind it you'll be fine. Especially if you have 4 wheel drive.

It has always been a goal of mine to call one in through the snow. Several years ago I made a trip from central Missouri to Lincoln the 1st week of May. . It snowed on us both ways (6 -10 inches). There were still birds strutting in lots of fields. Wish i would have been hunting that trip.

Those Merriams don't mind it at all. We've killed them in the snow, but the day after was unbelievable.

They're used to snow up there.Good luck and do us all a favor and post pics of the area. thumbup

Weather prediction is for a "historic" spring snowstorm; be safe.

Y’all do not want to be out there in the kind of snow they are going to get. Delay until later, the flooding as it melts is going o be really bad as well.

Well all (3) ended up getting it done in WY. The weather seemed to mess up the birds in SD a little more. One of my buddies filled his tag while me and another guy did not. Got real close to some nice birds and could have harvested a few young ones, but couldn't seal the deal. Overall a great trip despite the weather.

I was out there last summer visiting there and S Dakota. I was pulled over watching some game and land owner pulled up to see if I was ok. After talking for an hour I left and had permission to hunt 20,000 acres of private land he and his brother owned. Just need to get there and hunt now.
