What are the suggestions from Aldeer on liming a pond? I have a new pond that is an 1.75 acres. It has no fish in it yet. I just priced having it limed. The one guy I talked with said they come out and spread it in a barge. It is a $2,000.00 minimum to bring the barge out. Any better solutions?

Just sling it from the bank . Works fine. You probably don't need that much anyway.

I have one that is in need of lime currently, but it's 26 acres. It need 4 tons per acre and it's $60 per ton for them to come put it out on the barge. If u have a place where they can drive a lime truck up to it, call your co-op and just get them to come out and do that. I bet you don't need more than a ton or two. No way I'd pay $2k minimum for them to come barge it in that small of a pond. Really supposed to get your water tested to know exactly how much to put out.

you can put it on pallets anchored to the bottom and let the wave/wind action wash it off. Or, what we did one year was mount a utv spreader on the bow and hauled ass around the pond shovling it in the hopper. But that's when I was 25 years younger. It took a loooonnnnggg time.

Barge seems crazy on a small pond.

Good luck on getting a co op to do it. Headland sure won't touch mine, i guess its too much of a liability.

Bagged lime, cut open and pushed in from the bank. Spread out around the pond. It works.

Liming a pond is no different than liming a field. The lime has to make soil contact, and cover the entire pond.

I've done it from a flat bottom boat. It takes a long, long time and is a lot of work. Your intent should be to cover the bottom with lime. Getting the lime in the water does very little. Like liming a field, liming half of it does nothing for the other half. My brother and I limed ours probably 15 years ago. We'd load up 5-6 5 gallon buckets full of lime. We'd swap out putting it in the prop wash of the trolling motor. You'll be amazed how fast lime sinks.

Here here! Yes, when liming a pond, you are actually liming the soil underneath, not the water itself. The recommendation is 1 ton/acre/year. However it is such a process, you don’t want to have to lime every year, so we recommend 3-5 tons per acre. You can’t over lime a pond like you can a field, it will just last longer.

On smaller ponds, I have seen the spreader truck application method work.

Use a pontoon boat that's been stripped down to the deck. Put a bucket or 2 of lime on the front and drive around with a trash pump on that rig and wash it off the bow.
