Anybody have any experience with this caliber? Specifically for whitetails. I am thinking about getting a decent upper and scope and was curious about effectiveness on deer and expected ballistics.

Awesome cartridge very accurate and will work great on whitetail.

I love mine. I took my 22” Grendel to the field twice last season. Shot two deer and three hogs. First was a nice buck that I hit way to high in the shoulder(in the area of meat above the vitals but below the spine) I never recovered him, but jumped him after a 700 yards tracking job. He survived and was caught on camera three weeks later. Shot a good doe and put the bullet where it was supposed to go. She was DRT. Never took a step.
Caught some hogs in a field and let two line up with one’s head right behind another’s head(ears behind ears) and put on bullet through both heads. One DRT other went about 20 yards and rolled. Caught one more leaving the field and one shot rolled it over DRT.

Mine shoots factory Hornady at around 0.3moa. I would feel comfortable shooting it at game out to about 500 yards if I needed to.

I just got my Grendel put together and went to the range for the first time this morning. Mine has a 20" heavy stainless barrel. The first group with 120gr fusions was about 1.5" at 100yds. I wasn't real happy with that and my buddy had some Hornady black ammo. That group was about an inch. As we shot more it seemed to tighten up some. The best I got with the fusions was .75 at 100 and about 1.5+- at 200. Plenty good enough for me. I stretched her out to 500 and had no problem hitting the steel. I think a better stock (moves a lot) and a new trigger will really make her a fine shooting machine. Can't wait to try it out on a deer.

Just sold mine about 2 months ago, if it didn't have the 24" barrel i probably would've kept it...

Respectfully, the 6.5 Grendel is not a 500 yard whitetail cartridge. It has less energy out there than a .30-30 at 200 yards, and drops over 51 inches.

The furthest I would take a shot at a deer would probably be under 400 yards. I've looked at the creedmoor but would like to add to my AR collection and was curious if at max distance of 400 yards the Grendel would fit my needs.

Energy remaining at 400 yards is 1028 ft/lbs

For me personally, when a round drops to about 1150 ft/lbs is the limit of where I would shoot a deer. I would consider the 6.5 Grendel to be a 300-350 yard max cartridge with a long barrel.

Most people miss that factory stated ballistics is with a fixed breech barrel, not a gas operated semi auto weapon. That will make a healthy difference in velocity. Hornady chart shows their velocities with a 24" barrel for the 6.5 Grendel

Sure it isn’t ideal and if shots beyond that were likely I’d be out of luck but all aspects considered I’d still pull the trigger out to 500. Velocity is more than sufficient for expansion. It’s 10” lower than my 165gr 30-06 at that range which I can easily dial for and with less wind drift. The energy is lower than I’d prefer, obviously, but then it is still on par with a .44mag at point blank and more than double the energy of 9mm, .45acp, and a broadhead from a bow and I’ve managed to kill deer handily with all of those.

My buddy bought a 6.5 Grendel upper from BCA for less than $250. We’ll see how it does saturday. I’ll try to remember to post our experience.

I built my son one for hunting. I think I fed a build thread on here for it. It makes a nice shooting house hun because it’s compact. Shot a doe with it last hear head on at 60 yards. Shot went in the neck and we pulled the bullet out of the hind quarter. She was DRT

What ammo are y'all shooting? The 120gr fusions shoot good enough for now. But I never like good enough. I'm gonna try different ammo and see if I can find what it likes best. I just really want the fusions to work as that's all I shoot in all my other rifles and I like the performance on deer.

Hornady AMAX or SST

I’ve got a die but I haven’t worked up any loads yet but it looks like you get close to 2900fps with the 100g bullets.

I have had 3 Grendel’s and currently still use one. The fusions never shot worth a flip in all 3 of my guns. The fusions shot about 2 to 2.5 MOA in all 3 rifles. The dang cheap steel case wolf shot better. I shoot hornady black and hornady eld-x in mine. Those shoot .5 to .75 moa.

My Grendel is not gonna be a paper puncher. It's gonna be a tool. I know what round I'm gonna use on hogs. I'm hoping the more rounds I put thru it the better the fusions shoot. I don't know anything about the SSTs or the ELDMs. I did kill 3 hogs with the SSTs with my 6.8spc. All were about 200yds running. Had to shoot 2 again to finish them off so that's not a fair test. I can keep the fusions in the 3" diamond on the targets we were using at 200yds. I may be over confident in my ability but I would like it a little tighter. Just not quite satisfied yet.

I have enjoyed my 6.5 Grendel's, its a fun caliber in the AR. I have two ARs built with Faxon match series barrels, and one BCA complete upper. Both of the Faxon barreled guns will shoot .5 to .75 MOA with Hornady Black ELD-M or Hornady Custom SST. Have not shot a deer yet with the 6.5 Grendel, plan to do so this season. I have used the Hornady SST bullets, either factory or hand loaded, in several calibers with good results on whitetails. I expect the same results from the SST out of the 6.5 Grendel. My plan is to keep shots less than the 300-350 yard range for whitetails.

I built a 16" Grendel that was 7 lbs before the scope. Should be perfect for walking thru the woods and taking 200-250 yrd shots. I'm going to try the Federal 90gr TNT's first then maybe the Hornady SST of Black Match ammo. DNS on the Grendel forum has taken a lot of hogs with the TNT's. Here are two ballistic gel test on the SST and Black ammo (16 and 19 inches of penetration). The ballistics work out to be what my gun will do in the 150-200 yrd range. More than enough for deer and hogs in Alabama.

Love mine

I've got a 20 inch Grendel with carbon wrapped bull barrel. Still lightweight. I shoot 120 gr. barnes tsx out it. Absolutely hammers deer.
