I looked at a friends 99 Tacoma with a 4 cyl. today. It makes a pretty loud tapping noise at idle. You can hear it from 30 feet away. Rev it up a little and it goes away. Turn the AC on and the noise lessens but is still there. It's full of oil and only has 205K miles.
Before I dig any deeper I thought I would ask you toyota guys.

sounds like what is going on with my f150. fuel injectors in mine have to be replaced.

is it worse when cold? could be piston "slap". or could be valve adjustment if it is there all the time and gets better when warm.

It ever had a timing chain put in it? 2.7s not as bad as 2.4s on chains but they won't run for ever either. Could be rocker, piston slap as already suggested. Rock Hunter might have an idea.

I never thought about the injectors. Good thought.
I should have asked if it did it cold. I'll have him check in the morning.
Don't know about timing chain. Is it a chain and not a belt?

My 5.3 liter chevy has always had lifter noise on cold startup. This does not sound like lifters to me.

If something might have happened to the oil pressure simehow it could have wore the main bearings. I had a 2001 Ford Ranger that somehow blew the front of the oil pan gasket out and this is what happened to it. My granddaddy used to own a paint and body shop and also done alot of mechanics. He told me just to get some straight 50 weight oil and put in it and it should stop. so I got 4 quarts of the 50 SAE racing oil by valvoline and a quart of lucas and it stopped. It ran like that for about 4 years til I totalled it out without ever having another problem. No matter what people say the thick oil works wonders. Thats all my granddaddy used in any of his. Its certainly worth a try before tearing the thing down

No noise on cold startup. The noise is loudest at the rear bottom of engine. Not looking good.

Older model toyotas run much better on high octane. Try some booster and 93 and see if it helps.

Is it a standard or automatic? I had a 1995 Nissan hardbody 5 speed that started making a tapping noise like that, and when I pressed the clutch in the noise went away.
Took it to the transmission shop and they said it would be $1400 to fix it. I dont know what it was, but I only paid $500 for the truck so I sold it to a mexican like it was.
May look into that..

Here's what I know about Toyota trucks and I've had a few of them. If the ticking noise is at cold start up and for a few minutes afterward, all you need is a Toyota oil filter. It took me two brand new Tacoma's and a mechanic to figure that out. You put a Toyota filter and it stops. Don't ask me why or how either because I don't know. That truck and the next one never clicked a time but I ran Toyota filters.
If it does it all the time, it could be a bunch of things.

A Toyota 2.4 or 2.7 4 cyl.that's maintained well, and not rode hard and put away wet too often ain't wore out at 205K. Now a 3.0 V6 is another story.  My guess is, it's worn the hell out.

The only problem I've seen with the 2RZ and 3RZ motors is the balance shaft bearings can wear out and make noise, and that's not very common. It could be a wrist pin or rod bearing. Not a lifter, because those motors don't have lifters or rocker arms. Hard to say without hearing it in person. Either way it's not gonna be good if it's bottom end noise.
Those motors are usually good to 300K+ easy without any problems "if" they are halfway maintained. they don't have the timing chain problems like the 22R's.
As for the infamous toyota oil filter check valve myth. I challenge anyone with a 22R and a toyota brand oil filter to let it sit for two or three days without cranking it, then go out and unscrew the oil filter and tell me how much oil is in it.
