I know this isn't a 12 year study, but just common sense. Over the years, expecially this year, I have noticed a lot of small spotted fawns in September or later in south Alabama. If they are born anytime after September 1, with a gestation of 200 to 205 days then the breeding date of a high percentage of the fawns I see would be after January 31.
If the bucks in your area are rutting before Jan 31 you can enjoy the best buck hunting. I don't understand why the Alabama Game and Fish can't divide the state anywhere around a line E & W in the Montgomery vicinity. Take two weeks away in December and add it to the end of the season. Let the hunters in south Bama hunt the rut.

Go to the advisory board meeting in Feburary and ask them about it. You would probaly be about the "umpteenth" one to do so over the past 20 or so years.

Not all parts of north Bama have an early rut. Ours don't start until the last few days of January on a good year.

I killed a newborn fawn with the tractor this Wed. in wilcox county. I was sick about it but the doe had it hidden in some really thick johnson grass and just didn't see it.
205 days back puts gestation around the end of Feb. If that was the second rut then she was in the first time the first of Feb, right?

Ask them why Alabama hunters should be excluded from a required public comment period and review process when decisions related to hunting seasons and bag limits are being considered. Explain to them how special interest groups such as AWF, QDMA and ALFA are strongly influencing how our seasons and bag limits are being set for qdm purposes instead of the purposes defined by our game and fish laws. Explain to them that some of the state biologists within the Department of Conservation who are heavily envolved with these groups with their qdm agendas are being relied on for their biased opinions instead of unbiased biologists who do not have a qdm agenda to support. Explain to them that the separation of powers clause in our state Constitution was placed there to protect against the executive branch of government assuming the powers of both the legislative branch and the executive branch to the end that we may have "a government of laws and not of men".

This is a very frustrating topic for me as well. It would be nice to hunt the rut. When you still see bachelor packs in late January, it's common sense. The deer aren't rutting until February. Every other state gets to enjoy a good rut. Why can't we?

I saw a spotted fawn in my pasture on Friday. A doe (presumed, couldn't tell from the car, and the crown of the cranium was gone) was hit and killed on the highway about 200 yards from the pasture. I hope it wasn't the momma of the fawn.

we have a few fawns thats are anywhere from a month and a half to a month old. then we have a handful that we just got pics of that dropped just this past week

Our fawns have already lost spots, most of them anyway. I jumped one yesterday that was 35-40 lbs.

And I used to hunt in an area of Russell co. that had bucks chasing the second week of November. I guess that since Phenix City went by Eastern time, The bucks thought they had to follow the Georgia rut schedule. LOL

My dad & I usually hunt the ML season in Russell county. The bucks are chasing/fighting big time in early November.

I saw two young spotted fawns yesterday near Guntersville. They looked to be 3 weeks old at the most. So their conception date in northern Marshall County matches the date from Furflyin in southern Marshall County.

Fawns have always been born in mid Sept to mid Oct where I live and hunt in Mobile county. So no surprise here.

I hunt in Winston County; I either blinked and missed it or we did not have a rut to speak of this past season...
I only seen 1 group chasing and they were pickiune spikes on a doe and that was it...
Was around Dec 17th - 20th or so...
I hear tell we have a "Yankee" rut (1st or 2nd week of stick-n-strang season) up around the southern edge of Bankhead where we hunt also...
Hope we have a good one this season, it snowed a TON up that way also... Was hopin to do some blood trailin in the snow, but taht did not work out...
