I just picked up at the Mobile flea market last weekend a Red Maple tree that is about 8-9ft tall. When I went to load the tree in my truck, I noticed that the pot was pretty light and the soil was real dry, but the tree looked nice and healthy. I got it home and gave it a good slow soaking. It is still in the pot as I haven't dug a hole out back for it yet. I give it a good slow soaking every day to keep the soil moist, but it seems as though the tree is dying. The leaves are now brittle and turning orange/brownish. This color change wouldn't bother me a month from now, but it seem premature and also the dryness of the leaves has me concerned.

Do ya'll think it will survive? I plan on getting it in the ground in the next few days, but I don't think that should be a major issue as it has been growing in this huge pot from probably a couple years now.

It is likely probably root bound and has been lacking essential nutrients; or the roots have been allowed to dry out for extended times. The roots of pot bound nursery stock can cause roots to rot, or it can cause nutrient problems. This is likely the reason its leaves are turning brown. (root problems)Red maples are hardy trees. If it is growing or the limbs are live underneath the bark, it might be fine.

Planting the tree properly using 50% topsoil and 50% clay is my advice for the next step. (they like slightly acidic soil) Planting depth is vital as the roots are usually shallow on Maples. Plant the tree with the roots spread out evenly and the **root collar at ground level. Mulch the newly planted tree well and water it regularly.

I'd plant it as soon as possible.
