The best index to a person’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.

Aside from the usual Suspects that have already been mentioned... Platoon, FMJ, Lone Survivor and American Sniper, etc..... Always have loved the John Wayne movies.. The Green Berets and Sands of Iwo Jima. I think The Guns of Navarone, Lawrence of Arabia and Where Eagles Dare probably deserve a mention.

There are some great movies that have come out on Iraq and Afghanistan that are more of a documentary type format but I have found them to be very entertaining without all the Hollywood unrealistic made up action. As I remember they don't really have that much of a narrator talking over the whole show like something you would watch on regular TV. They were as good as anything mentioned above that is Hollywood Fake in my book.

Check out these three movies/documentary: The Hornets Nest, Restrepo and Korengal

The Lighthorsemen is a good WWI movie about Australian Cavalry fighting the Germans and the Turks in what is now modern day Israel.

Great suggestions.

Another good WWII movie is Defiance. True story of group of Jews escaping Nazi persecution and joining up with Russian resistance fighters to stay hidden and attack Nazi patrols.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Hamburger Hill... And Gettysburg is a pretty good movie.

Yeah, well, I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas: sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches.

Watch the German language Das Boot with subtitles. Better than the Americanized version.

By the way if anyone liked Das Boot you need to find the book "The Admiral's Wolfpack" it is a factual account of the German U-Boats from WWI through WWII and parts of it are absolutely riveting. I found it the first time at beach vacation rental "borrow a book and leave a book" libraries at the condos where we were staying and I blew through the thing while sitting on the beach in just a few days. I couldn't put it down. Loaned the paperback to someone and never got it back, but then years later found the hardcover in a thrift store and it's been in my library ever since.

That was better than I expected. We stumbled upon that while surfing the movies on Amazon Prime.
