here is a link to an aerial video of the fire. notice all the fire trucks? this is 13 different depts with nearly 25 units. majority are tanker trucks from surrounding departments bringing water as the first in units were pumping more water then what the hydrant could supply. the tall ladder truck you see in the video is from montevallo fire dept and is operating at about 1750 GPM, yes that is gallons per minute, the first in calera unit is 1000 or 1250 GPM and the auto aid alabater engine is 1000 GPM the other 2 calera units are 1000 GPM, so that is in the 6000 gpm range and on a good day your hottest hydrants can get you maybe 2000 GPM at the best http://www.wvtm13.com/article/aerial-video-of-massive-fire-at-motel-6-in-calera/18172949

I've always wondered why, if a structure like this is fully engulfed and there's no obvious way to save it or anything, that such great effort is made with the water. Just let it burn, spray any adjacent buildings, and then when it's dying down hose it down to finish it.
