We have had lots of discussion on gamecheck, deer numbers, and restrictions. What is really missing is an articulated direction from those in control. It is impossible for people to get on board, if they don't know what the goal and plan are. We need to know what the State's objective is, what constitutes a healthy State herd, what kind of numbers would be in each age class, what kind of numbers would be good for each county, what kind of real data will the State use to determine if numbers are acceptable, and what can we do to reach the goals. We can't even agree as to whether we should be regulated are not, much less what the regulations should be. But, we might come much closer to agreeing, if the State articulated a rationale plan based on real figures.

The state's objective is more money.

The state's objective is more money. seems to be the right answer. But it would be nice if they at least tried to have an overall plan on paper.
I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore I believe in work, hard work. -George Petrie (1945)

The goal and plan to get there is certainly #1. Now we are well past #1 and still no goal or plan. There would still be significant controversy but easier to get hunters to get other hunters to buy in. Have to make it the cool thing to do. Even with that different areas would have to have different plans to get to a common goal. We would have to have a leader of strong character and morals the hunters would buy into. Does NOT have to be a biologist but a person who would listen to and trust the biologist in the field. A person who would call all the biologist together and let them tell him the direction to tell the hunters to reach the goal. Then he presents the direction professionally and becomes the face of the program.

I said this same thing when all of this started. The leadership did not do a good job of building their case. I really have no problem with GC but I also don't have an issue with feeding corn and hunting over it. I hunt out of state and deal with both and checking deer hasn't stopped me from killing one and feeding corn is no magic bullet. To me these are both minor issues and the leadership has allowed the focus to be on the minors instead of the majors. Let clear understandable goals and objectives always be the major issues that are being discussed or things will constantly be clouded.
I've seen more conversation on corn and game check than anything else. Most honest people will comply either way in the end, but if you sell your vision properly those same people will not only comply but also become advocates for you. It seems even some of those people are not only not advocating but are also questioning things as well. I had a wise man a long time ago tell me "never major on the minor". It holds true most of the time.

You have to start somewhere to get information that maybe will help manage the deer population/hunters. I don't know if it will.

ABSOLUTELY!! But its too late now for GC. Trying to get advocates now will be like trying to put tooth paste back in the tube.

Sometimes it seems that the goal is to have perpetual studies, as in job security.

This is what needs to be done: Pick a Southeastern state that is "better" than Alabama. Tell us what about that state's deer herd is "better" than Alabama. Tell us how that state achieved it's greatness. Tell us what things in that state cannot be done in Alabama and why. Tell us what things we are going to do here differently to overcome the obstacles. Implement the other state's plan, plus or minus the few things that can or cannot be done in Alabama. When someone complains that the plan won't work, point to the other state.

That’s easy just look to the East,West, or even North. Kind of interesting that this is the only State that seems to think the the whole state can sustain a good deer heard with basically no limit on does harvested.

While I enjoy shooting and eating all the does that need to be shot around where I am (as many as possible),... I’d be fine with adopting neighbors to the north’s gun seasons of only a few days a year

Y’all should mozy over to BullNettleNews Mississippi deer forum and see all the belly aching about low deer numbers. No different than Bama, excluding the MS Delta.

They should try increasing their legal bag limits on does to one a day for the whole season then they really be belly aching about low numbers lol

Just went and read a thread and there is one difference that stood out to me.....the State is actually reducing the bag limits on does across their state. So that seems to be a step in the right direction but from the majority of the posts in that thread their state may have waited a little too long to start.

I think one thing the state could do is try to shorten the length of gun season. The major hurdle in doing that is having deer that rut anywhere from late Nov through early February all across the state. It could be done, but it would take more than just 3 zones like there are now, a much more intensified focus on the deer rut statistics and genetics for particular areas. I think having a one size fits all gun season that last nearly 3 months is excessive to say the least. Shorten the gun season length, break it up into 2 periods perhaps, and you'd probably see numbers rebound significantly and have less pressured deer when it came time to hunt with a rifle.
