Be honest with you and say that I've heard these same reasons/thoughts for the past 20 or so years. Other than land being overpriced, everything else is just driven by marketing and peer pressure.

It be's that way sometimes.

nobody wants to touch on the declining testosterone in men and it's effect on the primal drive to hunt your own food? studies have shown the kids of today have substantially less testosterone than their parents at the same age markers.

judge sharpe, you went and made me feel all nostalgic talking about quail hunting. I'd give anything to go back to the 80's when the quail hunting was still a thing around these parts. I cant remember the last time I had the ole heart tested by jumping a covey of quail. thats one of those things kids these days wont get to experience like we did and telling them about it just wont do it justice.

A supposed decline in hunter numbers and hunter interest and CONSTANTLY increasing lease prices don't add up.

If so many are giving it up and fewer are replacing them, where is all the available land?

Well, I can say an old man said some things once about the future of hunting and it has stuck with me. Basically, he said the same thing as PCP about hunting will be for the rich. He said a lot of things that influenced me on hunting. I knew once it was suggests he shoot a deer at night and he came unglued. That man was John Wooters.

His influence on my thinking about hunting has me now seeing a bad future. I'm afraid, like with everything else, money is the problem. I see what appears money is starting to influence the Game & Fish Dept. in decision making. Hunters trying to out bid each other on leases. The cost of processing.

Now, what I see in the near future is hunters are going to have to adapt to hunting and land managing on smaller acerage. Land is steadily being divided and sold or as inheritance. Even some big timber companies are selling small parcels. Hunters are going to have to adjust from 1000 acres with 10 members to 100 acres with 1 member. Done correctly, that will not be a bad situation.

I don't see all the hunting buisness money going away. I think to replace the decline in young hunters there will be alot of minorities picking up hunting that we don't see now. African, Mexican, asian, and more. these are pretty much untapped markets to the hunting industries.

I have several black friends that hunt but the only Asian hunter I have ever even heard of was the Laotian guy that was trespassing and shot up the land owners a few years back. come to think of it dont think I have ever seen a Mexican hunting either that wasnt a guide.

I don't see deer hunting and hunting in particular becoming this rich mans sport,, if we continue to call deer hunting a sport I see more opposition to hunting.

The hunting shows need to change up the focus as to why we hunt , instead of these pros seeking antlers first and then meat,, the hunting networks need to show it more as sustenance being the number one priority for why we hunt and secondly the quest for big racks,, longer beards , more duck bands etc. Quit playing to the anti hunters sentiments, be more like Uncle Ted.

We'll not have much of a future in hunting if we let people keep calling it a sport. The ranks of anti hunters will just keep climbing higher in numbers.

Our kids hold the future of deer hunting in their hands, teach them now how to combat anti hunting or they will talk of how their elders used to hunt and now it's the Kings deer and the kings forest and only the king , his family and guests are allowed to kill the Kings game for sport and food.

Also ,,,tell me how the billions of dollars taken in each year from hunting will turn it into a rich mans sport. It's our money that helps boost the local, state and fed economy.

We have a deer season that runs for 4 months straight with essentially no limit on "deer". You can shoot as many as you want really. You just have to stop at a certain number of bucks. Where I grew up that was not the case and that forced us to hunt different animals, ducks or geese or use different weapons like a Muzzleloader, late season bow hunt, etc.

What unlimited deer killing has done is breed an entire generation of hunters that start as a kid deer hunting too early, not small game hunting, and they run out and blast the first thing they see. They never really learn to hunt anything. We are just sitting in a shooting house those first 5-6 years they are hunting looking at a green field. They blast a lot of first deer, some get 30-40 first deer. Like first one over 60lbs. First Spike. First 4 point. First Cow Horn Spike. First Mature Doe, First one with a weighs over 100lbs. Of course their Daddy will pitch a dang full on hissy fit because... They NEVER shot one that big, etc. Folks like me are just a bunch of A-holes.

And then when they get tired of shooting deer and actually hunt they haven't learned anything. And now they are in their teens. They are waiting on a buck looking at a field and they don't have the attention span and after a season or two they pretty much lose all interest in it.

Why?

Because they never see any mature deer because everyone blasts them before they get that big. They don't understand how to hunt. They sit for a couple more seasons get into high school and figure out about girls and football games, etc. They lose more interest almost completely.

When they are 30 years old they have pretty much lost ALL interest in it and just think they want to go out and shoot one for "Meat". They go hunt grandpa's place, don't buy a license because they want to claim they own the land, shoot the first yearling that steps out and that's deer hunting for the season.

That's how I see it, not like a lot of y'all.

Instead of dragging my kid to the shooting house I've been in the woods squirrel hunting with them. We've stalked some rabbits in the garden. Shot a couple doves off a limb, etc.

My kids are not going to get bored. And when they start deer hunting they aren't going to just go out and blast deer. They'll be hunting instead. Probably out of a Ladder Stand in the woods. We are going to have some close encounters, probably get winded and busted moving, etc. That's what makes someone a hunter. I learned to sit still squirrel hunting before my Daddy would ever take me deer hunting with him. And that was early for me but I pretty much lived in the woods growing up. And maybe they'll turn out to be a waterfowl hunter and not like deer hunting that much. That's ok too. But they'll be able to walk out on to a piece of property hang a stand and kill a buck even if they do.

What most of y'all are talking about with kids and why they don't love it... is not hunting it is just shooting something and maybe hanging out at the camp house and having a sleepover. A significant portion won't stick with it. Does not surprise me AT ALL.

RANT OVER.

I agree with a lot of what you said, especially the hunting other stuff besides deer. For kids it is not fun sitting for hours in a shooting house. I grew up hunting everything but deer. Where I grew up in WV there was no deer. I think every young boy or girl should have a decent squirrel dog. When my granddaughter gets old enough to follow one through the woods I will be getting me and her one.

Yall have how many members on how much land? Fewer people are controlling more acerage so its that much less property for the whole. How many doctors/ lawyers do you know that own 500-1000 acres and let very few people hunt it? I know a lot and that takes away places for 5-15 people to lease and hunt that property. Surely you can see that.

I copied this from a google search:

Alabama has tremendous natural diversity with more than 1.3 million acres of public hunting land and some of the most liberal seasons and bag limits in the nation. Alabama hunters have an opportunity to hunt many species, including, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, feral hogs, waterfowl, rabbits, squirrel, mourning doves, and many other species.

I wonder what the % of hunters only hunt public land. I have no idea.

There's a lot of good posts in the thread; thanks to all who responded. I agree with the idea that many of the kids getting into hunting are not really learning in the right way. There nothing I see wrong with a parent sitting in a shooting house with a kid and letting him shoot deer, but that doesn't do much to make him a hunter.

My dad made me a hunter by buying me a single barrel smile and turning me loose to squirrel hunt. I learned how to stalk, and also learned how to sit still when conditions called for that. He rarely sat with me. I killed my first buck on a dog drive and I had drawn for a stand like everyone else. I was 10 at the time. There aren't many places that would happen today.

Issues like this are important, but this is not what I see as the doom of hunting. I think our biggest problem is that as our country moves further into the Post-Christian era, more people come to see hunting as inhumane and will want it stopped. If you believe that meat cones from the grocery store, it's hard to be convinced that hunting is a reasonable activity. I had a guy on a different kind of forum tell me that I was such a wicked person that he wanted no communication with me. He wouldn't consider anything I told him; said it was the difference between him being civilized and me being uncivilized. What happens when a majority of the people believe as he does?

The Left knows how to use the courts and the media to advance their agenda. I think the election of Trump proves they don't yet have a majority, but they have made significant progress in my lifetime. If they continue at the same rate, hunting as we know it won't exist 100 years from now.

I hope I am wrong.

PCP, I understand your concern. You never know what could happen. Where I grew up, I was told by an elder that lived during the depression that they had to hunt to feed themselves. He said that is was hard hunting just to find a squirrel, possum, or any kind of meat over thousands of acres because it was hunted out, resources depleted. What if Kim Jong Sum Bich or someone else decides to launch a EMP or two and wipe out our power grid, computers, radios, etc. What if, what if, etc. Who knows. One thing for sure, things will change..... for better or worse.

Hunting to have a living is a hard job. Hunting to put something on the table, but not going hungry is easier, hunting for the sheer pleasure of being in a stand a dawn, watching the world wake up and catching a glimpse of the heavens before the gates are closed is a joy whether or not you see any game. Hunting for big racks becomes a hobby like playing golf, something to do when you when you can, and it can become a passion like anything else, but we are taught to circumscribe our desires and keep our passions in due bounds. To each his own and to each I hope they find pleasure in what they do.
