I see on Outdoor Alabama that they release trout several times a year in Sipsey. Does anyone here fish for them? Or is there anyone that knows how accessible it is. I have a canoe that I can do it out of, just have no idea about that part of the world.

Fished it for years..Great fishing, they release trout every 3-4 months all year..You can get to it off HWY 69..From Hwy 69 to the pump station is deep water and can float it..From the pupm station to the dam is shallow and able to wade...You can park at the pupm station and walk dowe=n or just pull off the road and walk to it...There is a tackle store right there at the river use to be call Riverside Fly Shop not sure what the name is now..But they'll be glad to help you out..This time of the year it's hard to fish cause they are always running water..Chenk with Alabama Power to see if they are running water...

John and Elizabeth sold Riverside Fly Shop last year, I think, and a new guy is running it.

The state releases trout down below the dam. Many get caught, some don't and can grow a bit.

The times I've been, and I haven't been a lot or lately, I used a black or olive Woolly Bugger with medium strips on the retrieve. If there is a hatch coming off you could try to match it. I believe the San Juan Worm also will work.

The thing to always remember if you're wading down there, or I guess in a canoe, is to watch the water. Unless there has been a change, there used to be no warning system when they started to release water.

No horn or siren or anything other than you realizing the water was at your knees and now is at your Johnson, and it's time to get on the bank.

If you are fishing there and you see the water coming up, get your ass out fast. Reel in your line and start getting up the bank on the side where you parked the vehicle, unless you're unable to get there.

The water can come up pretty quickly, so keep your peepers peeled.

Call Riverside Fly and stop by there before going. They'll help you out.

thanks for the info, I will try and get up there at some point this year. I have never caught a trout, so it would be a new experience. It would be me and my son or me during the week before school gets out. THe best I can tell it would take me at least 90 minutes to get there.
