Getting a decent bonus through work at the end of the year and I'm thinking it is about time to upgrade the 1993 Fourtrax. I hate to do it because the Fourtrax is a beast but, my brother needs a wheeler so it's as good an excuse as any.
I hunt in Jackson county and I'm looking at something with a little better suspension than my old one. A buddy of mine in the club has a newer Yamaha Grizzly with independent suspension. He has back problems so its good for him but I'm trying to decide on a Ranger or 2014ish Honda Foreman. I have heard the Rangers are loud but to be honest, I have hunted with that Fourtrax for years and never had a problem and if y'all have ever listened to an early 90s Honda, you know they aren't quiet. Not to mention my uncle hunts with an 84 Honda that sounds like it has straight pipes. My question is, are the Rangers any louder than something like my 4 wheeler?

I wouldn't say it's louder, probably about the same but the ranger is much more convenient to be able to just throw stuff in the back and go without having to strap everything. I have four wheelers and also have a 570 midsize ranger and would hands down choose my ranger

I don't know that the sound difference between an ATV and UTV are really going to effect much. I have an 02 Rancher, it's as loud as most fourwheelers out there. I'll be more concerned with a comfortable ride with the next wheeler I get. I would like to have Independent suspension.
Recently I've been using my grandfather-in-laws new Honda Pioneer 1000. It's Way more comfortable then a 4wheeler, but not near as maneuverable once you get off of a trail. I haven't noticed much of a sound difference.

utv...the windshield and any type material partial cab enclosure (even without doors) in the dead of winter with a hard nor'easter on is reeeeeeeally nice! it'd be hard for me to go back to sitting on top of an open air 4wheeler

Last year I was in the same boat as you. I have a 95 Fourtrax and they are virtually indestructible. Unfortunately, my back is far from indestructible and I needed a suspension upgrade in the worst way. I initially was looking at Hondas 4 wheelers with independent rear suspension but the sales team left me alone on the showroom floor and I wandered over to the Rangers. Ended up with a 570 XP Ranger and I absolutely love it. Rides great and the extra utility and storage is awesome. One of the most satisfying buys I have made in years. And when it's 20 degrees on a cold morning the windshield really pays off when your going 45 mph on the highway.

I bought a rancher with independent suspension, it is a great ride in the woods and smooth.
Well, the way I see it is there's just too many assholes

They all have back problems. Now whether or not its caused by years of trail riding on mountains I don't know...I just know once you screw up your back its hard to get it back right. I'm going to go on craigslist and take a gander. I won't get my bonus for a few months so I have time to think on it. I'm just really cheap and don't like to spend money on something unless its right for me. I'm taking classes again and paying for it out of pocket so I also don't want to go throwing extra around on something I don't want.

I bought a rancher with independent suspension, it is a great ride in the woods and smooth. See that's my thing...I don't care if it has the windshield. I know the benefits of it, it just doesn't matter to me. I've always had a 4 wheeler so that is what I'm used to using. I do like the space on the back of the Rangers though. One thing worse than bouncing down a mountain on a stiff suspension is trying to carry a 4 year old bruiser down the mountain on a stiff suspension.

I bought a honda pioneer 500 and like it pretty well. I put a benz silent rider muffler on it and its pretty quiet. The pioneer isn't going to go everywhere a 4wheeler will, but it will go where a lot of utvs won't because of its size.

For comfort, a utv. To go get a deer out of the woods, atv. There's no way I could drive in my woods with a utv. For price, an atv all day long. You can buy 2 atv's for the price of one utv. I'd love to have a utv, but i'd rather have land.
