..the large type....not the small type. Does anyone know of a good kennel in central Alabama, or the Montgomery area that sells large Rat Terrier puppies specifically bred for squirrel hunting ? Rat terriers have a short average lifespan because of their propensity for jumping on anything be it Chihuahua or a Pit Bull. My wife has a Jackrat, half rat and half Jack Russell, jumped in on a brawl my Labs were having with a local Boxer/mastiff mutt. If I hadn't been there he probably would have bought the farm. A few hours later he was still bloody and in the yard posturing and kicking up dirt, challenging the other dog who had went back to his own yard.

They sure do, DixiePatriot. My 25 lb. Rat Terrier jumped my nephew's Black Lab and actually hurt the Lab's L rear leg. I thought my RT was dead meat. He was lucky.
They'll also fight coons bedding in squirrel nests. My RT pulled out and killed a medium size coon. Again, I thought he was meeting his doom.
I liked the newer blue Merle variety from France a few years back. But I read numerous articles relating bad health histories on them. (really expensive, too) I want a black-white-tan RT...large variety w/a lot of white for visualization in darker woods...and from/a good, proven hunting stock.

Rat Terriers are feisty little dogs! But they are highly intelligent dogs and make fine squirrel dogs and 'house alert' dogs.
