Hey guys! Been absent awhile! Got married and moved to a new house and all that.
Last night I replaced the CV axle on my 06 Silverado. This is basically a follow up post to the fix. About 2 weeks ago my truck started making this awful whining noise. The whining noise you would expect from low power steering fluid or malfunctioning pump�but it was louder and it was predominantly when I turned left. I checked the fluid and it was fine so I leaned toward a bad pump but still something didn�t sit right with it being when I turned left. Last Sunday I put on new brake pads and when I did I noticed grease all over the CV assembly (all over the place really). So I thought maybe that noise along with the normal popping from the CV might be the culprit. But, surfing forums I never did see anyone that said they had that loud noise from turning, only people on forums saying they had the same issue turning left a low speeds.
Anyway, I got the replacement done last night just hoping it would fix the noise and from what little I have driven it (last night and today to work), it seems like it did fix it. Have y'all ever experienced this when doing this repair? I'm asking because even though it seems fixed, I'm wanting to make sure I don't need to keep looking for what caused that racket.

Does that truck have the sealed bearing assy at the wheel? Do you mean the assembly in the boot on the outer CV?

Yes have seen it several times. It is normal for popping and whining when the boot goes dry. Could also be a hub assembly. Jack the tire off the ground and grab to top and bottom of the wheel and check for play.

Jack the tire off the ground and grab to top and bottom of the wheel and check for play. Ok. I'm hoping that fixed it. Yes, I checked that. My truck has been really weird with bearings. The first time I replaced the wheel bearing the symptoms weren't typical wheel bearing symptoms but I jacked it up and it was loose so I changed it. I put a cheapo on there (stupid idea) and in a year the abs started locking up on me. I thought it was a bad sensor so replaced it. It fixed it for awhile and started back up so I jacked it up and again it was loose. That time the speed sensor was the only symptom.

So I thought maybe the normal popping from the CV might be the culprit. I've never owned the make and model of truck that you're referencing but I've never had a vehicle of any make or model that CV joint popping was a normal/acceptable sound.
