You guys have any experience catching reds/trout in this area? Going down early August and haven't fished down there before but would like to get the kids on a few. Any insight would be much appreciated!

All kinds of good both fresh and salt water there. I lived on a sailboat there at the marina for a year. Both piers offer good salt water fishing. Blacktip sharks are a blast to catch at night, the scallop vestival is a good time. Apalachicola is only 30 minutes away if you like oysters and good seafood. Friend of mine is a guide there if your looking for an inshore, or bay trip, and another friend runs the head boat out of the marina. Clara is the manager at the marina and can point you at several good charters out of the marina if your into that.

The best fishing is in Appalachiacola Bay. Without a boat, you would need a guide to get to all the places I know to fish except one. You still need a kayak or something. But, of you head out on Cape San Blas, there is an access to St. Joe bay rich after you make the big turn to the right on the Cape. It is the only turn once you turn off 30A. You can put in a kayak or canoe there and catch trout around the grass. You might get a red or two as well.
