I saw a panther with an orange tag on it in the Panhandle in 2008 on property I leased. It was 10 miles as the crow flies to the Geneva county AL line. Good thing it was tagged, very big, and I had binoculars or I would have confused it for a bobcat and shot it.

Most of FL panthers in SWFL in Big Cypress National Preserve. Rarely seen. Rural Collier county and a few to north.

Looks stuffed to me. I didn't see bobcats for years then changed places I hunted and were covered up with them. I believe I have seen one but couldn't be exact as it was at night and crossed a road. My parents both saw one up around Eva one time.

One can only hope they would all disappear. What they have done to the biodiversity in the southern half of Florida is a damn shame. They have wiped out the small prey base, wild hogs and are now decimating the deer herd. Some areas it has gotten so overpopulated with them they are killing peoples pets , livestock etc. Believe me you do not want them established in Alabama.

Would love to read legitimate stories, research, bio background and more about the overpopulation of panthers that have wiped out the base prey, wild hogs and deer to the point of now eating pets. That's fascinating.

Any sources to cite? State and fed agencies? News media? City-county-state officials?

I think that the numbers are all a bunch of BS. Kinda like AL's deer population and kill data. Biologists say 180-200 in FL yet 30+ are killed by cars in FL last yr? They must be the stupidest animal alive if almost 20% of the entire population is killed annually by vehicles. I'll guarantee you that SE Alabama has them from time to time. They are way to close to the FL line in NW FL to not wander out of Blackwater State forest or Eglin over around Brewton, Florala, Atmore, Bay Minette, etc. I'm sure some have probably even taken up residence.

Check out the Panthers of South Florida facebook page and you will get all the info you want on what these cats are doing in south Florida. The deer harvest in Big Cypress WMA in 2000 was 284 bucks, last year 93. The hog harvest in 2000 was 140, last year 2. How would you like it if your lease or favorite WMA had a near 75% decline in harvest? You would be as pissed off as the hunters are in south Florida. These cats are not afraid of people either. It can make you very uneasy if as you are dragging out a deer and have a cougar watching you from 40 yds away without showing the least bit of fear. The numbers the "experts" cite are bullshot also. They only count panthers on public land and they only count adults. How the freak can you get an accurate count with a half azz accounting like that? The whole panther thing is just a scam by the panther researchers to continue the money flow as it has been proven that the "florida panther" is none other than a western cougar living in Florida. It is no more endangered than the ones in Texas where you can shoot them 365 days a year. Once it was cool to be able to see one occasionally or even a track now you just hope they all die.

didn't they introduce Texas cats into the Fl population to build up breeding stock numbers several years ago????

So we are now using a Facebook page as accurate data? I'm not saying they're wrong, but that ain't exactly science. Also, there's a huge difference in correlation and causation. Without any studies, you can't just say that the cougars are the reason for decreased deer harvest.

Yes they did it to increase the genetic diversity, it helped for awhile but now the genetic abnormalities are showing up again. That in itself should have been enough to take these predators off the endangered species list as they were no longer "pure bred" They all could have died and been replaced by Texas cats and no one would have known any different. I cannot recall which organization just concluded a study that showed all the puma in North America belonged to one specific genus, that in fact there had never been a western Cougar or Eastern cougar, just a cougar. Please note that Puma, panther, cougar are all interchangeable terms for the same animal. Most, 99%, of the outdoorsmen in south Florida hope that this new evidence will lead to the feds finally taking the "Florida panther" off the endangered species list and allow the Florida Game Comm to manage them as they see fit.

I guess you missed all the news video, newspaper stories, reports from the South Florida Deer resaearch projetc, the report from the IUCN none of which came from FWC. I guess when a persons mind is made up they only see what they want to see.

Come on hog, of course its a hot topic and you know there are black ones in AL too. Dont act like you dont know that someone's daddy that was in law enforcement, once knew someone that kept a whole pack of black panthers they used to release every night to guard drug drops up in your neck of the woods. rolleyes
