Going after a merriam/hybrid in Ne. Any tips would be appreciated. I've hunted Kansas once for rios and figure they are pretty similar but didn't have a lot of action there to get a good feel for em. Should I call a lot? Loud? Move? Stay put? Decoys? They can't be hard compared to Bama birds but don't wanna go in without a clue of what to expect. Thanks

I love spotting and stalking them after the initial fly down. The hens will call A LOT on and just off the roost. Once they hit the ground, they'll be running, sometimes literally, to wherever they're headed to that day. After fly down, I like to spot them and use topo and veg to get close and call them up.
I don't like setting up on the roost trees at fly up. That seems to mess the birds up for the next few days, ime.

Good luck.

I can agree with him. If you do hunt a roost evenings are better. Like he said once they hit the ground them joker's are gone within 30 minutes usually.

Don't be afraid to call loud. Sometimes very loud.

get close before fly down, not Bama close but turkeycraponyerhead close. If you set up 100 yards out you may very well be out of the morning loop. Get close and whack him when he lands.

I noticed the merriams in west NE don't come to the call as well as easterns. But there's a lot of them and if you can get close, you can coax one over.

Probably the only place I've been where a big ass loud box call works better than anything else I've tried throwing at them.

Just pretend your turkey hunting in Alabama, then try about 60% as hard and you will kill one (maybe)

Merriams will gobble like all hail at fly up time so be out in the woods then to roost birds for the next am. I've marked a trail up to my sit down spot in the dark.

They also usually gobble EARLY in the am, well before walking light. Get close.

When hunting out of state be prepared to think outside the box. If you think it might work, try it.

in my experience hunting Merriams just like you do Easterns will result in few dead birds. Adapt and overcome. Rios can be frustrating as all hell and run you over miles of terrain. If ya just sit a while all those birds that pitched down and took off will come running back past ya!!!

The wind blows incessantly out there. You have to call loud just to be heard.

You need to call louder than here in Alabama, if you think its too loud, then call a little louder
