What do yall use for treats when training a pup basic commands off the leash? Got him used to his collar and walking on a leash good but he's hit or miss when i turn him loose and call for him... thanks for any advice

There's no reason to use treats. Just use pieces of dog food. Most treats are too exspensive and too big for training purposes. The dog food is easy and quick for them to eat.

What kind of dog? I always train on a lead and never let them off until I'm done with basic obedience. I start a pup off with a 20' lead then advanced to a 50'.

Hes a mountain cur, going on 3 months old. My thinking for training him off the leash was that he will spend alot of time off of it anyways, especially when we're walking in the woods

Boiled chicken. Works better than any other treat.

Put 1" squares of deer liver on a cookie sheet and dry them out in a warm oven. Put in baggie in freezer and thaw as needed.

I have fooled with several labs. Train them with praise and a few treats or dog food all dogs are different.

I'm different I guess. I don't give treats for doing what his job is. I use pressure, then lots of praise for good work. I prefer a choke collar and have not found a need for an ecollar.

Keep a lead on him while training always. I prefer a 20-30' lead for all training. Slowly start removing the lead once a great foundation has been set. Always be consistent with him and remember you're the master and your word should be the gospel to him.

FYI...military working dogs are not given food treats of any kind...a simple kong or other rubber toy is used to condition compliance. This item is only used to reward good behavior...nothing else.

Just wanted to let you know there are other ways to reward preferred behaviors from dogs other than food treats.

I have used dog food, hot dog pieces and cheese. For puppies this works great. At 3 months force isn't appropriate but a leash or check cord helps to guide them. You have to make the decision to use treats or any other form of training based on the dog. Some thrive on treats and others simply learn to work when there is food in your hand.

Although the military does not use treat training, they also wash out a lot of dogs. All dogs won't fit their program. The ones that don't are returned to the breeder. For most households this isn't an option with the family pet.

puppy crack works good. I had a dog that minded great in the house and on a leash. But other than that it was hit or miss. He would then make a game of wanting to make me chase him. 2-3 times with the e coller broke that. In his mind he didnt have to mind cause i couldnt catch him. Sure there is probably other ways. But electricity is quick.
