That's a lightning strike. Look at the expanded metal. There is damage in two places, plus the main hole. It appears there is a curling side like the metal heated and curled while cooling. No one bullet could have done damage in the solid tubing and slightly damaged the platform. This is a great argument for bailing out when it's going to rain.

This is also the top of the stand, looking down Yes, I based my observations on that. And the fact that the shot direction originated from behind the stand, from back of the stand to front of the stand. Possibly a Trox assassination attempt?

I say lightning. Look how the paint looks discolored, like it was heated. Looks like somehow it arced to the metal below the hole. You can see the little dimples, like when you weld.

The bullet skimmed the top of the platform like a skipping stone, is my thinking.
Exactly. I don't get how we can all be looking at the same photo and not see that. Of course, I'm not a ballistics expert, but it looks pretty plain to me. At the bottom of the pic is the first impact. It barely makes a dimple in the metal. The next spot just above it in the pic, you can see the rounded shape of the bottom edge of the bullet and it has dug a little deeper. To the left (arrow) is where it ripped the web of expanded metal loose. In the third from bottom circle, the bullet is digging a pretty deep furrow and should be deforming and slowing the bullet drastically now. At the top of the pic, the bullet is transferring most of it's energy into the thin metal and is deflected upward sharply, thus tearing the metal as it continues on.

So the 4th impact caused more damage than the first 3? A bullet isnt going to skip 4 times within 2-3 inches. IF it was a bullet, the damage would be at the 3rd impact, where it would have caught the corner, not the opposite side.. assuming the bullet is moving bottom to top of pic

It's actually hitting the high spots as it travels across an uneven surface and digging deeper as it goes.

I'm stayin with bullet theory at this point. Metalmuncher explained it well.
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Good theory, but if its a flat surface, why the gap between strike 3 and 4? A bullet would rip through it... as a i said, the hole is square. Nothing about the pic says bullet. At that angle of trajectory, a bullet will have 1 skip, not 4 especially on expanded metal in a gap no longer than 3"

I agree, the bullet was fired from below and then angled thru the side of the stand and blew out the top.

It is not yet deep enough to touch the tubing, but it is close.

The ole Aldeer CSI is smokin hot. Can someone weigh in on Vincent Foster? We could get some cold cases solved around here. I would think that the heat associated with a lightning strike would have left some kind of heat signature in my P.R.O. fesssional opinion.

Back and to the left!! Back and to the left!! It's gonna be a turkey shoot. Guy Banister was seen in the area of the stand the same day. Two men were seen disassembling a rifle behind the wooden fence up the grassy hill near the stand. "Fair Play for Cuba" signs were found under the stand. Trox never should have made that sharp, slow left-hand turn onto Elm. All those open windows . . . it's gonna be a turkey shoot!

Didn't mean to shoot your tripod bud. My apologies
There is 2 different high fence. 1 small and one big! Mine was free range in the big pen and was not a breeder buck. Why does it have to be twisted around??

I agree with the bullet strike, most excellently explained by metalmuncher.
To be fair Trox, I think you should go shoot your stand to try and recreate the event.
