Have opportunity to go this fall. Have choice of either Oct 29 - Nov 2 or Nov 5 - 9.

Which one?

I don't think you can go wrong with either, and you can't predict the weather. But, I'd choose 5-9.

October 29 - Nov 2 if you want to increase your chances of getting an arrow in a mature buck. November 5 - 9 if you want to see more of a show in the form of rutting activity but decrease your chances of killing one.

This was my thought also, but I've never hunted the rut there before.

If it were me I'd go 5-9. They will not be locked on does that early. Just pray for good cold weather and you will be in the action.

I lived in Illinois for a bit and loved hunting the first of November. Now that we have moved here I still have a few properties to hunt up there. You can't go wrong for any of the dates you listed.

I would rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

This^. Not only for the reason Squeaky said but it will be more likely that the corn will have been fully harvested by then. I have hunted up there when the corn was still standing and after it was harvested. I'll take after the harvest any day.

Has more to do with the weather than the date. Plenty of deer and low pressure on private party means a good time anytime. More deer movement with cooler weather. I even hunted in the rain there and saw deer. As soon as the rain eased up they were moving everywhere. And yes I missed......LOL

You can't kill them if you don't see them. Hunt as close to Nov. 10 as possible.

So how is the hunting in Illinois. I've only hunted FL and AL. Looking at Heartland lodge in Pike county Illinois but never hunted the state before. Is it worth the 12 hour drive?

I've hunted Illinois for the past 4 years. I've killed bucks on November 12th, 13th, & 18th with a bow. Killed on the 20th with a shotgun.

I've hunted Harpoles Heartland Lodge twice. Those are the only two outfitter hunts I've been on. We had a good time. The accommodations were top notch, although I don't care for how good that is when I'm hunting. I can sleep in a barn. I killed a doe and 130" 9 point my first trip. Second trip was only a three day I believe but I did see a few deer. Things may have changed since then. My two trips were in 1999 and 2002.
