Early season when the birds are still somewhat flocked up is a sight to behold. I'm not saying that's the best time to hunt them, but the sounds on the roost out of those big flocks is unreal

I was there(Beggs) 4/20-4/23 and in my opinion I believe we were a little early. The birds were still grouped up with hens. They were vocally responsive to calls but that would not come to us. As crenshawco mentioned the sounds were crazy. They gobbled 30min before any birds in Al gobble(and I don't mean just one gobble) and they gobbled for 45min to an hour after pitch black dark. Lots of fun but hard hunting when we were there.

I was between Woodward and Luverne on 4/15 and tagged out in 2d. I enjoyed them being grouped

If you plan a trip, it's probably better to go towards middle to end of April. It is fun to be out there opening week, and see, and hear the big flocks, but sometimes, it's harder to kill one when they are grouped up in big flocks. We had it good this year because there were big gangs of 2 year old birds, but if not, it can be tough the first 2 weeks of the season.
I've been going out there for many years, and some years it sucks to be out there the first 2 weeks. We planned a late trip in 2007 and started hunting on the 19th, and the amount of gobbling and older birds we killed was ridiculous.

end of April, early May is too late.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
