Another awesome show put on by a couple birds. No gobbling on the roost but when daylight broke I started hearing some. Not a lot, but some. A couple hens were working their way across an alfalfa field to my west and I heard a gobble at them. I hit my pot lightly just to let him know where a girl might be. Not an immediate response but another gobble rang out but closer, about 80 yards away and in the brush in front of me. I shut up and played the waiting game, hoping he would show up were I thought. Sure enough, I saw his head pop up and looking at my jake/hen set.
He worked his way to the dekes and was struttin hard for the lady. I let him work for a couple minutes just to enjoy his actions and was going to take him. Well, about 250 yards away I see another tom working his way to me. I rolled the dice on hoping the new tom would see the strutter and come in. He sure did. Once he saw the fan, he closed 150 yards in about 20 seconds.
Then the real show started. The new tom was the boss and proceeded to kick the first birds a**, try to breed my hen, and then kick the crap out of the jake. They ran around for a bit until I thought it was time. Pulled the trigger and another no flop.
My best bird to date. 25#, 1-1/2" spurs, 11-1/2" beard. My best spring ever. Good luck every one...keep at it.
