I feel the same way for longrange. The 300s are just fine, I have 4 or 5 of them , But for longrange the 7mms are King! Higher BC and better speeds. NOW for my next build I may go 7mm - 338 Lapua Imp. Best of both worlds!!

Big Al if you reload look at the 6.5-284. Plenty of energy at those distances (out to 800-1000 with right bullet) and it's easy on the shoulder. Your welcome to come up and shoot mine, or the 7mmag or 300wm if you want to get a feel for each. I've got a metal gong at 250 that's fun to ring with any of them.

Steyr is great. Just bought one this past year. Used a browning Abolt for 30 yrs and it still drives tacks. My steyr is pretty heavy if you do a lot of walking. I shoot 150 grain core lokts and they work great. Agree on the Steyr Pro Hunter. I have one in .280 Rem and it is silly accurate. So much so that it makes me a better shooter with the confidence of knowing it cuts like a surgeon's knife

Had an A-Bolt in .300 WM with a BOSS I picked up in trade years back. It was a great shooter, but MAN, that BOSS made her LOUD!! Wasn't uncomfortable to shoot, but you didn't want to be anywhere around when someone else was shooting it!

I'd go with the tikka. I'm a Remington guy but I have to say their quality the past few years is slacking. I've seen a good many that have rough chambers.

This guy knows his guns! In the 300 win mag the big bulky savage will out shoot most of the high end guns on today's market. Nothing special to look at but it does what it was designed to do very well X3 but I warn you mine kicks like a pissed off mule! Synthetic stock version is light I guess. I had to put a one piece DMZ mount on mine the recoil was knocking my scope off sight

Long range provides significant wound damage, but really close up better off with different caliber. The gun has so much power it actually takes a significant amount of resistance for a full bullet expansion at close range. Put your money in another smaller caliber unless just need the big bang. That way you will have another back up gun without that added re-coil and without the added expense of recoil reduction. It is like most say an overkill for Alabama game or loss of game in some instances.

I already have a 308 and 270 as well as slug gun..just thinking of something for those long shots.

Bullets don't expand less at higher velocities, but you might shoot such a large caliber with a heavy bullet that it won't expand as well inside a small deer as it would inside a larger animal.

I'm aware of that. I misread what he was saying. Just to be clear, I'm talking more theoretical than caliber specific. I don't know if you could shoot a bullet in a 300 mag that wouldn't work well in a deer or not. It really doesn't matter to me though since I have no need for a 300 mag to kill deer. I prefer something easier on the shoulder and that uses less powder so I can shoot more rounds for my $$$.

I would only want a 300 Mag. for a dedicated gas line or bean field rifle. It would be heavy with a high power scope.
I would go with a 308 if I wanted a 30 caliber to carry in the woods.
I've had a few and wound up trading them for less powerful rifle. I think everyone goes through the magnum stage of deer hunting. I still have a custom 7mm Remington Magnum that I use on powerlines.

Well said Bamabart. After seeing wounds on deer I shot with a 300 Weatherby Magnum at 40-75 yards with different loads I would rather have a smaller caliber due to more damage from contact point to exit wound. Read online for more info.

I have a browning a bolt and I have a x bolt. both of them are great but I prefer the A bolt. That gun is right on.
