I can hear it very well, I would guess at 100 yards at least in the woods. Yep me too I'm this way as well, sometimes further if he's in a pasture or clearcut. I have heard one for a good 150 in a pasture before. Heard one at over 100 in the woods one day as well. Dad and I were walking up a Rd, I told him to stop and sure enough about 100 yds to the left I see 2 gobs and some hens and I can hear the drum plinth as day.

It's a curse to be able to really hear good on that frequency be cause I can hear them from a ways off!!! But I can't tell which direction it comes from!!!It's the spit that I can't hear

I'm surprised some of you can't hear the spit. I can hear both sounds, but the initial spit usually is what catches my attention, and I can hear it a long way.

I can still hear low frequencies OK, so I can still hear drumming. I've heard 3 this season and all were over 50 yards away when I heard them. My high frequency hearing is gone and I can't hear gobbling very far now. If the wind is blowing I might as well stay home.
But hearing drumming is something of an acquired skill. A guy I've been hunting with several years said he couldn't hear it. We had a flock drumming on the roost one morning and he said he never heard it. But he called in a strutter this year and heard him plain, just didn't know what he was hearing before.

Ok I know this is a dumb question but what are they doing to make the drumming sound?

I can hear drumming much further that I can hear them spit. I generally always hear drumming before I pick up on the spit. I know that once I do hear one drumming my heart really kicks in to overdrive because that generally means that he is going to be within range and you just have to hope he presents you with a shot.

I've heard so much drummin now that if I hear any low freq sound of a truck shifting gears even, I snap into turkey mode and start reachin for my gun...like a version of turkey ptsd

I can hear both spitting and the drum, and have killed birds where that was the only sound that gave them away.
I've always assumed that in order to spit, they had to drum, and vice versa, but can they spit without drumming, and drum without spitting? I killed one on opening day this year that I heard spitting all the way in, but never heard the drum. At first, I didn't think it was a gobbler because all I heard was the spit and no drum, but it got closer, and he appeared.

Sometimes they will just stand and strut and not drum.
It's one of the coolest sounds in nature. The first time I heard it I had no idea what it was. It sounded like a sub woofer in a ghetto car but a long way off. I got to thinking afterwards that I was so far from a road there was no way it was a radio. The next day I went back to same spot, he gobbled, came in drumming and got killed. I knew then what it was!
Nothing like that sound. My 49 year old heart hits about 200 bpm when I hear that!

The drumming sounds like a tailgate on a dump truck a long way off. There's also a little bird that chirps that fools me frequently thinkin I'm hearing spittin. I hear both well at my age but usually can't tell the direction which really makes it intense.
