My dad has a fireplace, and he puts his ash across the road. The ash is hickory and oak.I've been thinking of spreading it in the garden, and tilling it in. I was wondering if it would help, hurt or just be a waste of time. Anyone else done this with good results?

I've never done it but you could use the ashes to make your own lye and make soap. Just a thought on a possible use for them.
I don't know how they would do in a garden. The pH may be too far lopsided, I'd check on that before I tossed them in a garden spot.

I can always tell where they have been dumped in the yard. Taller greener grass. High ammonia I think.

We had 2 pear trees in our yard when I was younger. They hardly ever produced until dad started putting fireplace ashes around them...then they produced so many pears that the limbs would arc down until they touched the ground. Pears turned out about the size of softballs.

In the early 70's I flew over the southwest Georgia area several times and noticed that the burned winrow areas would have bigger, brighter green pines than the rest of the area. Sounded like a plus for plants to me.

My grandad said to put the them around fruit trees so I do. Like so much he told me I took him at his word and never asked why. Haha

I have a planter that I dump ashes and burnt chips from my smoker in...you couldn't kill the stuff growing in it with RoundUp!

I figure theres a reason stuff grows well after a controlled burn, right? I realize its to help get rid of too much over growth and built up stuff....but it always seems to produce great after. Same concept?
I'm going to put some ashes in my garden this year. I think the soil could use it.
