This weekend was the first time I had ever witnessed a deer make the snort wheeze. It was a spike. He was running another spike out of a thicket. They came charging out and jumped a downed tree. The first buck kept running and never looked back. The last one stopped and snort wheezed at him, about 20 yards directly in front of me. Then he turned and trotted off pretty quickly, but in a different direction from where he'd come. That was something to see.

I've heard a buck do it exactly one time in 50 years. did it once to a good buck and he ran away like the hounds of Hades were after him...

One day last week I had 7 small bucks running one doe. The biggest of the bunch (I'm guessing him to be a 12" to 13" eight/ten point) must have snort wheezed 25 times. The doe would flop in anything thick, and he'd snort wheeze at the small bucks whenever they'd try to approach.

I've heard it maybe a couple of other times over the years. First time I ever heard it, I was bowhunting in Maplesville on a food plot. Two yearlings were feeding, and this huge buck came out on the far end of the field (probably 100 yards from me and the fawns). He immediately bristled up and snort wheezed, scared all three of us to death! LOL

I've heard it from two different bucks in the last 4 years. Killed one of them when he finally showed himself as a doe drew him from his hiding spot in a thicket. The second time was earlier this year. What appeared to be a good buck was following a doe but always stayed 20-30 yds from her and farther from my stand. She seemed to catch a whiff of my scent about 50-60 yds from my stand. She stood stock still for what seemed like 30 minutes. The buck stayed obscured by brush and must've grunt/snort/wheezed 15-20 times. She finally turned around and eased away and he followed, staying in cover the whole time. I never got a good view of him.

This happened to me one time in my life and it was about 2-3 yrs ago. Me and a buddy was walking around a walking track out back of where we work and there was a doe giving a pretty nice buck the run-around back there. He chased her around no more than 50 yards away from us. My buddy made a doe-bleat type sound with his mouth and the the buck stopped dead in his tracks, looked at us and snort-wheezed. Then actually took a couple of more steps toward us before the doe ran off and of course he followed her. It was pretty cool. I got the feeling we were about to be charged. Lol.

I've actually heard it too many times to count but never knew what I was hearing until I saw a hunting show on Pursuit Channel a couple of years ago use it to get a big bucks attention. I tried it one time and the deer ran away faster than if I had shouted and waved at them. I guess it works if used properly at the right time. I'm just not sure when that is though.

I also used to hear it a lot when I worked at a facility that had pen raised deer. The buck in the pen was well past mature and used to get his feathers ruffled every January and he would frequently do it, especially when wild bucks would start leaving scrapes around his pen. I had hunted many years and never heard it in the wild. Based on my limited experience, I think it's primarily used as an aggressive communication, primarily by the bucks that feel more dominant. I could be wrong. That may explain why some bucks are scared by it.

I have never heard it in Alabama. The only place I have heard the snort wheeze is in Kansas. To me, it sounds nothing like the way the guys on tv do it.

I've heard it once, a 2.5 yr old 8 pt snort wheezed at a spike that wouldn't leave him and a doe alone. A guy I know heard for the first time, last week.

Only heard it once. Season before last. Decent 6 or 8. I can't remember for sure, but not big enough to kill. He worked a scrape on the edge of an agriculture field, and snort wheezed. Almost more like squealing. Up until then, I thought it was some made up T.V. crap. It was all I could do not to lol at that buck. It was different.

I've heard it a few times but I agree with fnf......I've never heard a person do it correctly. I've also heard small bucks make a clicking sound. I haven't figured that one out yet.

2 weeks ago I had a 6 point and small 8 point fighting in front of me. The 6 point turned and ran and the 8 point let out a snort weeze. Scared me. I killed my first deer at 9 and I'm 51 now. First time I ever heard it.

Heard one a few years ago, only one in seventeen years of hunting.
Just saw my first buck brawl yesterday

They are talking about something different than blowing which is probably what you are thinking.

I've been lucky enough to hear it 3 or 4 times over the past 3 years. Also heard a buck do the "roar" 8-10 times a couple of years ago.

Heard a spike do a snort wheeze twice tonight after he whipped a two year old racked buck. This spike had to weigh 165 lbs and was twice as big as another spike in the plot.

I have never heard it but I have heard them clicking when they are hot on a doe and I have heard the roar which sounds more like someone chucking their guts up after too much beer.

Never heard it, but have used it successfully before. Last year I was hunting a wide powerline and saw a decent buck running right at me hugging the woodline. As soon as I look over and see him he dips into the woods and is quickly making his way away from me.

I stand up in my climber, turn around and find him in the woods, and grunt at him. Nothing. Doesn't even flinch and keeps on cruising. In my desperation I try my best impression at a snort-wheeze. I had only read about deer doing this, so it was a total hail mary in my mind. I cup my hands over my mouth give it my best go, and it was probably a lot more wheeze than snort, and still, the buck keeps moving at the same pace away from me, seemingly unfazed by my two vocalizations.

I sit back down and face out to where I was looking previously, assuming the buck is long gone. Little did I know that joker spent the next 25 minutes making a large circle back and snuck up within 15 yards of me, directly from behind me, without me knowing, before he catches my head moving and busts outta there. Surprised the heck out of me. Had I only stayed turned around...

I heard it for the first time this year myself. On my first morning hunt in Illinois......never in Alabama.
