I think that doe killing statewide should be banned except for farmers to get permits for does due to crop damage. I hunted Sumpter county years ago. There was a tremendous amount of deer. We didn't kill does and there were plenty of deer every year. I never saw an unhealthy or skinny deer. This talk of needing to remove does is BS! My personal opinion on crop damage tags is that the farmer does not have rights to the tags unless they are already allowing hunters the opportunity to assist in thinning the herd. A couple around hear won't lease or allow permit hunting yet obtains several dozen crop damage permits each year. That's BS. i bet i can tell why that is , because of dumb ass hunters that hunted it in the past . they didn't shut gates . to damn lazy to walk a little futher when it was wet around the fields . messed up drains in the fields whith four wheelers . i can go on . it became easier to just kill the deer out of season than to mess with hunters .

Yep really hogs damage crops and tear up fields and reproduce twice as fast. Do any of you people not have any bad spots hunting, I've had to deal with bears and hogs, deer will not stay close when they are around.

Sounds to me like someone did a possible poor job of interviewing and giving the lease to the right hunters.....

Or figgering out where our turkeys gone? Ain't that the truth. How about not spending another three years figuring it out and start restocking efforts now. Restocking ain't gonna do a bit of good in areas where turkeys aren't doing well, until we figure out WHY they aren't doing well there. Turkeys have already been restocked in several areas that have had considerable declines.

You can say that comparing fawn reproduction to turkey poults ''ignorant'' however what do you call killing thousands of does statewide year after year in the same woods that no one has ever legally killed, nor will they ever legally kill a hen turkey ? Thats the definition of ignorant !

Comparing deer and turkey reproduction and harvests strategies/bag limits is like comparing shark fishing to frog gigging.
Doe harvests has always been a very important part of managing a deer herd. With an increase in predators and land use changes people are going to have to understand where it's applicable and where it's not. The sad truth is the state has to finally step in and correct changes that the general populace don't have enough understanding in to make educated decisions.

I agree.....You would hope that the general population of hunters could make these changes on their own but it is obvious they can't.

Bigt, you're right. I really do think most people have the good of the deer herd in mind. Some are just ignorant what needs to be done and the group that I despise... the group of hunters that know the situation is but they pull the trigger anyway.

Remember when it was taboo to shoot a doe ? I just found this thread. I'm probably late to the party but I remember it well. I started hunting in the sixties on the Talladega National Forest plus Chocolocco and Hollins WMAs. I don't know if most of you are familiar with this area or not, or if you know the history. I love talking about this stuff and am stuck at the house anyway. This area consists of around 220,000 acres and is located near Oxford, Heflin, Edwardsville and many other towns and let's not forget Mumford and the highest point in Alabama. Love me some mountain hunting, well back in the day anyway. I'm pretty sure Chocolocco was restocked around 1946 with deer from North Carolina. The other WMA Hollins on the Southern end was stocked with native Alabama deer. With deer on both ends and new habitat availible, no hunting and no predators, the herds exploded. Deer were everywhere around Heflin by 1967 and I killed my first deer a spike on my second hunting trip there. Does were heavily protected, it was a sin to shoot one. But poaching was common for the younger crowd. I had 20 does followed by a lone spike... single file by me one morning on Chocolocca. You didn't dare shoot a doe on the WMAs, game wardens swarmed them. Killed a huge 8 point on Hollins in 1972. They honey hole was Skyline, that's what we called the road to Cheehaw. Deer weren't as plentiful but, they were hugh. I killed a nice 8 in 1976 there. My brother killed a monster 8 in my spot in 1978, while I was in Korea. I killed a heavy monster 8 in 1979. Around 1980 they opened the season on everything on Hollins. It was a war zone, most shooting I ever saw. The 80's and 90's, I was in the army. Thanksgiving day 2001, I doubled up with my other brother. I killed a field dressed 145 pound 10 point and he killed a 183 pound 11 point. My family killed numerous deer there (Skyline) over the years. Today none of us hunt there and there ain't a deer around. What the heck happened?

Now FullPotential, a biologist told you the same thing. Is that gonna be good enough or are you one of "those guys" that just keeps repeating himself. Found anything you can copy and paste by chance?
This is Aldeer! The place people come to vent their frustrations and completely change their stance a few minutes later...

Not sure I follow you there, what do you want me to copy and paste ? Deer numbers are the lowest they have been in years and continue to decline and misinformed ''hunters'' keep shooting does. Is that me repeating myself again ? As for comparing deer harvest to turkeys if you also think I'm crazy there, please explain.
Here I go repeating myself again, how many chics do hen turkeys have in comparison to does ? How many hen turkeys do we kill a year ? Hows the turkey population doing ? You can copy and paste this as its facts, I am repeating myself because so many people seem to think that harvesting 4,5,and 6 times as many does has bucks is not why our deer herds have rapidly declined. Not rocket science, just common sense. People also say that turkey populations have declined and they have had to start restocking efforts in some areas. Where and when are they going to start restocking deer ?

I don't know why people miss the point when it comes to killing does. For every doe you kill you have lost countless deer over the next few years. I hear this crap from people who say they just want to feed their family. If that's the case save all the money you spend on hunting and buy food with it. Stop shooting all the does.
