Does anyone out there remember back before doe days? Standing in line at choccolocco check station trying to draw a doe tag? What year was that 1986 ?

I'm no help here. That was two years before my birth

Naw, I remember that in the late 90's, maybe even early 2000's.

oh ok we only did it one time,bfore my father died in 89.

i remember it 82 was first time i ever stepped foot on a wma i was 5. we left guntersville 4 deep in a 77 chevy custom deluxe at 2:30 am. Back in those days you had to stand in line and draw tags out of a box. there was buck, doe , or either sex tags. i still believe the only reason they took me was to get an either sex tag(warden kept some in his back pocket for kids). I remember walking for ever behind my dad and setting on a ridge when it got daylight it sounded like a war. i saw my first deer that day some does come by i was begging my dad to shoot one i will never forget he said if i kill that moma that will be two or maybe three you wont see next year. That place back then was another world, yeah we didnt ever kill any real wall hanger bucks but to a young kid going in the woods seeing deer ever day made up for it. I often wonder if the reason youth dont hunt like i did when i was a kid was the dont have the oppotunity to watch alot of deer when they go.

i went to butler wma with dad on a dog hunt back then and was standing on a stump beside him when they cut them loose. In that drive that morning i counted 58 deer with in my sight and dad killed a nice 8 point. You talking about setting a 6 year old little boy on fire. i never carried a gun till i was 11 but i learned alot standing and hunting with him and them old men, and probably learned more about how to hunt from hunting small game than anything. Back in them days if you killed a deer at butler all you got was head hide horns hooves and one piece of tenderloin. Everybody on the hunt that day got a piece of meat. it was divided up amoung everybody there.

I remember a long line of people,like 75+,then they would open another line and them telling "everyone move over here every line has the same amount".
To be honest w you, my dad did it to try and kill a deer off of our private property,which wasn't far from choccolocco.It was l me my dad and 3 of my friends.
None drew a tag.

Done it when I was a Teenager. I had a 78 Toyota Landcruiser at the time. I remember one time I went, I had a date the night before the hunt and never went to bed. Drove to the mgt. area and went out on this ridge and sat down under a big tree in the pitch dark and fell straight asleep. It started raining and I woke up and HAD NO IDEA WHERE WAS or how I got there for several minutes. Weird feeling.

Yea, i remember it. Freezing to death. That was before gortex and thinsulate. Army camo was about all we had, then trebark came out. Sometimes i would see 20 doe deer on a hunt. As a matter of fact, you didn't stand in line when i first started hunting it in the late 70's, you waited in line in your truck and they would give you a permit at the gate. We always came in at the South gate. Later they stopped doing that and thats when you stood in line. I remeber it was a big deal on a draw hunt to get the special pink card or ping pong ball. It was like winning the lottery when somebody pulled out one of those either sex cards.

Back in the mid to late 70s my older brother and I always opened the bow season camping at choccoloc. We'd pitch a tent. It was either sex with a bow. We used recurves.No tree stand, and no camo. We would stalk the hardwood bottoms and it wasn't unusual to slip up on 10 to 15 does at a time. One morning we both ran out of arrows and never cut a hair. It was a lot of fun.
