Some of you might think I'm nuts....but how many of you have seen a black or dark grey melanistic white-tail? I saw one this past weekend in Winston County.

I've seen some very dark mature deer, don't believe that makes them melanistic.

I haven't seen but one. I was sitting beside my dad when I was 5 or 6 in the national forest in Perry co. We had some hounds run one by us, and I watched as he shot at it several times with a 30/30. Funny I still remember that, but I do, well.
And I think we were backstanding the dog hunters, but he won't own up to it. smile

I hunted one on Hollins in early 90's that was almost black. Was a BIG deer. Hunted him for 2 yrs, saw him several trips but never got a shot at him. He was 4 to 6 the years I saw him.

At my dad's club years ago there was a large mature buck that was almost black. He was very big, nice rack and even moved around slow for a deer. Everyone that seen it while hunting had odd things to happen to where they couldn't kill it. Several missed shots, some at close range. One day my dad finally had a 75yd broadside shot at him. He squeezed off. Miss fire! While my dad was in a state of confusion the buck slowly walked away. Nobody at the club ever killed that deer and the opportunities to do so we're surprising. They named him the ghost buck.

Wheeler has some very dark gray deer. Legs are black. I have seen one of them. My brother-in-law has killed some of them.

Yeah, I've been talking to Jeff about them. I guess they're not as rare of a sight as I thought. It was still something neat to see though.
