My transmission is acting funny on my '98 Chevy 4x4 1/2ton pick-up. It's feels like it is going into neutral round 25-35 mph. I can shift down from D to 3-2 and it re-engages. Any thoughts on what is going on? I bought the truck used and it had an new transmission put in it. The new one has maybe 50-60 thousand on it.
Thanks,
Dave

If your truck has the 700-R4 overdrive transmission it it, it sounds like you are about to lose your overdrive. There is a little plunger looking valve thing in there that you can try to replace and can fix the problem sometimes. That plunger is the "lock-in/lock-out" for the torque converter. When they go bad, it won't lock-in all the way and eventually burns out your overdrive.

4L60E is the transmission. I don't know much about them, but have read they are not the most reliable transmission out there. First thing is to check and make sure it's full of fluid. Is your check engine light on? I know some of the electronics on these trans will throw lights and may make it a little easier. There are a bunch of forums out there (fullsizechevy.com, gmt400.com etc) that can probably give you better information.

Another thing, if you plan on keeping this truck, have the shop look at the transfer case if you get it taken in. There is a clip that holds the pump in place in the aluminum shell that likes to break and cause the pump to rub against the case. Google GM pump rub. Fairly common issue in the NP transfer cases.
