Public service announcement ... I use one of these and it works great
Sleep Aid Mouth Guard

I've tried CPAP then had UP5 surgery (tonsils, adenoids, trimmed septum, bored out nasal turbinates, uvula removed) and still had problems.

Some of you could use this and it would work fine ... Costs $15 and much easier to use than a CPAP

Be sure to get the double sided one and when you form it, slide your upper jaw forward a bit

I use one. I cant sleep without it. I love it.

The key to bein happy with a CPAP is finding the right mask for yourself

I went in for my post sleep study follow up appointment today. I averaged 21 times per hour breathing pauses. But they told me the kicker is the length of the pauses. My O2 level was down to 82. I went from there to the medical supply store and got my CPPAP, so I will try it out tonight and see how it goes.

I had a sleep study but refused to get the CPAP for past five years. I know how I sleep and just figured I would never ever get it to work for me.

But he sleep issues continued and snoring was even worse, exacerbated by my love of cheeseburgers and gaining more weight over last couple years.

I finally broke down and got a mouthpiece a couple of months ago. Has made a big difference. Wife says I barely snore at all and if I do it is very quiet and relaxed. No more gasping for air, no more sweats, no more waking up choking.

Everyone should go get the advise of a doctor or sleep specialist. One day I suspect I need to revisit using a CPAP again. For me, the mouthpiece is what I chose for now.

You can get the special molded ones from a sleep dentists for $2K+ that lasts for years and years. Or you can get one of the ADJUSTABLE ones online that suits your needs.

I chose one from Vital Life because it was soft and adjustable.

Mike I'd be interested to know if that's any better than the $15 I'm using

A word of caution. Those machines wear and lose pressure over time. Mine did and I had a minor stroke from it according to the neurologist. He said get it checked every 5 years at minimum. New machine yields much better sleep.

How does one go about getting a sleep test, and does blue cross cover that and the machine?

Go see a doctor. You need to exhibit signs of apnea...observed bad snoring, observed stoppage of breathing while sleeping, exhaustion, inability to stay awake during the day, etc...

As far as insurance, it depends on the plan you're on. You'll have to call BCBS to discuss that.

You have to see a sleep dr. I used dr. Snow in tuscaloosa but there are others. Blue Cross covered the sleep study and after deductable was met 80% of the machine.

I've been on a CPAP for several years. Sometimes I start feeling like I don't need my machine and will skip a night. Big mistake! Even though I don't always feel great after wearing my mask, I feel much, much worse when I don't wear it. My Dr told me that severe sleep apnea did more damage to your body than smoking (3) packs of cigarettes per day.

Got you beat by a long shot. They told me I stopped 140 times an hour. The night of my study they came in and put a mask on me 50 minutes after I started.

I don't remember how many times I woke up per hour when I got tested but it was in the 30-40 times per hour range. I remember thinking I slept less than 2 minutes between wake ups.

The number I do remember is how many times I wake up now with a CPAP on. It averaged out to 0.6 times per hour. I just got a new machine about 6 months ago and had to get several card downloads and can remember that.

Speaking of CPAPS, I'm about to put mine on...

I buy extra cushions and mask parts on ebay. For me it's cheaper than insurance co pays. I definitely use more filters than insurance will pay for. They're cheap on ebay. I also figured out how to adjust my own machine. I'll adjust the pressure up and down depending on how I feel when I wake up. I don't recommend that for anyone else, but it's come in handy a couple times.

I also bought an extra machines on secondwindcpap.com to use in my camper.

I've got oily skin and I wash my cushion every night with Dawn dish washing liquid. It keeps it pretty clean, but about once every 3-4 months when it gets to where I'm having air leaks often, I'll soak it in hot, nearly boiling water (about 2 quarts) and 1/2 to 1 cup baking soda. It will deep clean the silicone and make it "sticky" again like new. You can only do a cushion that way a couple times. I think it thins the silicone.

I had the test a few years ago. It was tough trying to go to sleep with all the wires hooked up. No TV, no sedative, no alcohol, it's time to go to sleep. At some point I fell asleep and was awakened to tell me I had a few episodes of not breathing. Nurse put a cpap device that covered only my nose. It was hard to get used to the air and learning how to keep my mouth closed. I didn't think I would ever go to sleep. At some point I did...about 3 am the next day. I woke up seeing the nurse that was the spitting image of Kathy Bates in the movie Misery hovering over me. She wanted me to try the mask that covers mouth and nose. I became claustrophobic and was ready to call it quits. Worst experience ever for me. I would like to go somewhere else if someone could recommend a good place to have it done. I never feel well rested or like I've had a good nights sleep.

I averaged 55 "episodes" per hour, and my blood oxygen content was dropping down to 80%.

Must not be too serious, though. I had the follow-up sleep test done a week ago tonight, and I haven't heard from the Dr. yet.

Go get fitted for a mouthpiece. You can thank me later

Fuzzy Bunny

Been thinking about getting a mouthpiece, how much did yours set you back?

The Dr. was out of network for my insurance, but it seems like it was $600. Regardless of the cost it was worth it, and I would gladly pay it again if Something happened to it.
