I know the picture isn't great but it looked black and then up close it had faint bands. The body was pretty thick for the length.

Hard to tell since the head is still attached.

If the body is short and thicker it may be a hog nosed snake. Can't really tell from the pic. I've seen some like that color. Coolest snake ever! Won't bite and will play dead if you screw with it. They are endangered as well.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I say it's a racer. Got up close and personal with one as a boy when it fell out of a pecan tree onto my shoulders.

That's a black pine snake. Very nice find!! Thanks for not killing it. They are state protected, and candidates for federal listing.

Cletus, they're primarily limited to the extreme SW part of AL from about Washington County east into Clarke County and south to Mobile and Baldwin Counties. They do intergrade with the FL or Southern pine snake in south central and southeast AL. Normal length is about 3.5'-5', with some adults approaching 6'. They're usually found in upland dry habitats where gopher tortoises live.

Thanks for the ID. I was pretty sure that it wasn't poisonous so I just let him be on his way. Is it illegal to kill a state protected snake?
