My buddy David and I hooked up and got set up in an area he knew the birds have been roosting, at 6:20 David is looking at me and saying he doesn't know where the birds have gone because one has yet to gobble!! I said hang tight they will at 6:30.... Like clock work they started going off... Had about 5 gobblers hammering all around us, but one was real close right behind us roosted in a tree at the most 30 yards away. Then the hens kicked in on the opposite side of the clear cut!!! Perfect!
I just knew this Tom was going to pitch down right in front of us and this was going to be over in about 10 minutes tops... Well ole Tom had a different idea....
He pitched down alright, but he pitched down about 10 feet behind us I would guess... He was so close I could hear him breath over the sound of my heart beat! Then he drummed... Man I thought I was at the barbershop and was fixing to get a high and tight!!
I have to tell ya the hair on my neck stood straight up and now I can hear David's heartbeat!!! This bird then blew out a gobble that rocked my soul, three putts later and the Tom was making tracks back away from us and me wasting a 3 inch number 4...
I've filmed allot of birds up close over the years, but this was the best encounter I've ever had in the Turkey woods...
Thanks David for the invite, I would drive all night and 500 miles to experience something like that again....
