The top bar hive isn't worth much as far as making and harvesting honey, but it sure can make some bees! I looked inside it today and it was frame after frame of brood. I took out a few frames of brood and one frame that I could see eggs in to try to make a walk away split. Maybe they will make an emergency queen cell out of one of those eggs.
I haven't been able to get that to work before but thought I would give it another shot.
When I designed the hive, I made it so the bars would fit in a regular Langstroth hive so I split it into a regular nuc.

Was the comb old and brown or still soft and yellow? If it was old and brown, google OTS queen making and try that. It makes a huge difference on queen quality and success. They can't chew down the old, dark comb and the queen cells don't get enlarged enough to make a good queen. Make several notches so you can cull or remove extra queen cells to make nucs. Maybe they'll make 10 good cells and you can split them up into nucs.

Didn't know about the old comb. The brood is toward the front and the honey in the back with the top bar and this was the first frame of brood from the back. So it was some of the newer comb....maybe it wasn't too old.
I was amazed at how much brood they had.

Our bees are way behind up here. I made a split yesterday and have a queen to put with them, but in hindsight I should have kept the $30 for the queen and waited a couple weeks to make a split.

Mine are slow to build up. All of them are queenright and have brood but they should be bringing in a lot of honey now and just don't have the populations I would like to see.

Do any of you use a queen excluder? If so do you put it between the brood box and first supper or between the 1st super and second supper? Thanks

I don't use an excluder for a honey production hive. I use them occasionally if I can't find a queen and I'm going to use them this year on a cell builder hive.

Excluders. I have always used rthem between the top brood box and first super.I think I may change my way of thinking. Im about to start thinking I should let the queen do her thing. if she can lay brood in three brood boxes , good.
Fur. What breed of queen did you buy. The one i am having an explosion of bees with is an orange one. i got her last year and she was bought for Italian. My other one that iwas bought for I talian looks brown ish and isnt doing a fourth as good.

They were supposed to be Italians. I just got them as a get by. Later in the year I will kill them and put in some of my feral survivor queens.
My bees came from a source of local varroa survivors cut out of a tree in 1996. They don't have a pedigree or name but they're good bees.

I didn't use a queen excluder last year and let the queen lay where she would. I thought I would like that but didn't really like the brood in the honey supers so I put the queen excluders back on. I really haven't decided what all methods are best for me yet!
