Took my oldest son yesterday. First time he’s been to the stand with a rifle. He’s been with me plenty of times before and I’ve never made any mention to him about him killing one. I wanted to explain exactly why we kill deer and what happens when you pull the trigger. Then let him come to me completely on his own without any influence from me when he thought he was ready. He decides he wants to kill one so I got him comfortable and accurate with the rifle. After multiple safety and shot placement talks we head to the shooting house yesterday afternoon. I got the gun out the window quietly for him and reached over and clicked the safety off for him when he was ready. He got steady, got on the deer, and did everything else completely on his own. I kept telling him to wait and take his time and he finally got tired of listening to me I guess and he said “daddy, I can kill it.” I have never experienced a feeling like I did when that gun went off and that deer fell. I am as proud of my buddy as could be. I look forward to the day when it’s his little brother’s turn and I can hopefully have all three of us in the shooting house to experience it all over again.
