You’d have to hire an agent to figure out where to buy .

Not every one of them, but better than 50%.

Chevydude and abolt are dead on. Bama folks run to a state where hunting is far more limited and sing it’s praises. But mention restricting harvest here and, well….. lots of crying. I know folks in Illinois (serious and successful hunters) Say they are seeing a reduction in number of older age class bucks due to hunter numbers and additional crossbow use. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Just want to add this, I'm not necessarily for restricting deer harvest. I think there are a lot of factors that come into play when managing a piece of property. Some places need to kill several deer a year to maintain a balanced herd, others don't need to kill any at all. Asking the government to do something so we can have big deer, is akin to opening Pandora's Box. I have little to no faith in the current DCNR leadership or the State of Alabama to not royally f**k it up.

Apologies as I wasn’t clear on that….. I’m not for restrictions either. The buck a day to a 3 buck a year is what I was referring to. I have zero faith in the current DCNR and expect nothing truly beneficial out of them. It’s up to the landowner and the guy on the trigger. Alabama will never be Illinois / Iowa / Kanas. The definition of “trophy” has to be adjusted for the hunting area and one’s personal desires of happiness. Location and neighbors being a key factor as well. Keep expectations achievable and you’ll keep it fun. You can let deer walk for the rest of your life and never see a 180” buck. But 130-150 is reasonable in many places. Some places not so much.

Bucks like that aren't behind every tree in the mid-west. That's a high end buck anywhere. However, to answer the question, yes it would be easier to grow them out there. They have superior genetics , better soil / nutrition and age structure. Their gun season isn't 3 months long.

Deer in the Midwest are larger for two main reasons. Soil fertility, which you can not change. They have fertile soils. That produces large deer.

Second, they have older age structures.

Yeah you can grow big bucks in the south but it's two different sub species of whitetails. Just seems to me a 280# deer would grow a larger rack that a 180# deer on average. There's a reason why there where giant bucks being killed soon after the restocking program and I don't believe it was solely because there was more agriculture.

IA Muzzleloader is 10/15 - 10/23 then 12/19-1/10 Shotgun is 12/3-12/18 and no rifles allowed. Bows other than the above.

As far as owning a farm out there. Having one with both food, water, and shelter belt cover or a significantly sized woodlot on it would be the key. That and as always....location, location, location and neighbors, neighbors, neighbors. Anyway you cut it, you've got an infinitely better chance of growing a monster out there than you do here.

I've been hunting in Kansas for the past week. Every time I go I'm amazed at the soil in the fields. It looks like french roast coffee and is so rich.

But the biggest key is LET THEM GROW TO MATURITY! Three and four year old deer aren't mature deer. I didn't kill one this week, but I passed on at least 10 bucks that would've been killed on 90% of Alabama hunting clubs.

Dead deer don't grow.

A cool buck that was in the taxidermist shop in Kansas. Scored 190+ as a non typical.
