I don't get to watch TV much and I'm not much up on popular culture in particular, but the other day while out of town on business I had a few minutes to watch some TV in the hotel room. This show was on Discovery (?) and boats and crews were competing with each other to see who could catch the most Tuna worth the most money. Of course there was all the fake "drama" of a reality TV show, but the dun dun dun daaaaa moment was always where they bring the fish in to some kind of fish appraiser dude and he tells them what he will pay them per pound for each fish. I found it startling that he was paying up to $25 a pound for a "dressed" fish. All I can say is that Mrs. Irish and I must be eating some pretty cheap tuna.

Big price difference between giant bluefin and the Ahi tuna that most folks eat. Almost all of the giant bluefin goes to Japan

It's a TV show - so just like the interweb, don't believe all that you see/hear. (Dock prices paid are total "made-for-TV" BS!)

I don't know what the fishermen actually get paid, but sushi quality tuna bring ridiculous money at auctions in Japan, like $100 grand or more for a single fish

I don’t think those prices are too far off the mark for the fish they are catching on that show. ICCAT rules and NMFS regulations make the domestic bluefin fishery a very niche/limited catch market. Most of the quality fish does go to Japan and single fish have fetched over $100k in the markets there. Not usually our fish but there is big money to be made on this rapidly dwindling species. $25/pound is rather low for average fish but hook and line caught fish build up a lot of lactic acid which can drastically lower it’s value at the dock. Also, the wholesaler has to leave room for profit when he moves the fish out. In my youth I was part of a crew that brought a legal bluefin into Pensacola. This was a pre-spawn spring fish from the far end of Desoto canyon. Within an hour of docking there was a helicopter on site with cash to trade for the fish. To this day I haven’t tasted bluefin.

Well dang, I had a thread on it a week ago..you must have missed it.

I like the show. Ive fished right there out of that marina with one of the old guys who was on it, the guy who Harpooned them, Kevin Leonowert. He was the captain of the "Christina".

I like the show and I dont think it is that fake to be honest.

Kinda reminded me of Gloucester and the Tuna fishermen there.

Think about the tiny amount of bluefin that goes into a premium sushi roll (or sashimi) at a nice sushi restaurant.

$40-50 for a few ounces

Those Yankee accents make me cringe...

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

It’s worth the money. Both the fish and the beef
