I think that now as well. The reason I quit, I would get so mad playing because I don't shoot par. I would come home mad, yell at the kids and wife because I had a bad day at a game???? So I quit. Golf was very fun when I played in the "hit and giggle crowd." 1/2 Case of beer and a losing a dozen golf balls was much more enjoyable.

That's my kind of golf

John Daly came back from being a drunken slob to win the British Open and then dropped right back off the scene. I figure this won't be much different.

Yeah, but we are talking about wins here. Everyone you are playing against now has the "SAME EQUIPMENT". No one has an equipment edge over the rest of the competition. So a win is just as legit now as it ever was. Maybe more so because of how many more quality golfers there are competing.

It's like ths; the cars they run in the Indy 500 today are waaaay faster than the ones that ran in the first race back in 1911. But that doesn't matter. All competitors had access to the same car technology back in 1911 just as they all have access to the same car technology today. So people won for the same reasons back in 1911 as they do today. The ability to set up a car to run well and the skill of the crew and driver.

It's the same with golf. If modern drivers are adding 40 yards to your drives then guess what? They are doing the same thing for everyone out there trying beat your ass every week as well. If modern irons are more forgiving and help you hit more greens then "GEE", guess what they're doing for your opponents as well. In the end the deciding factor comes down to the same thing it always has; the skill of the individual golfer. Because they are all using similar clubs, balls and playing the same course.

If you gauge success in wins only then you have an argument, I guess. But then you have to look at the exact number of tournaments played. Vijay Singh plays almost every weekend, or at least he did while on the PGA tour. He was the NO 1 golfer into world at one point.

Was Richard Petty a better NASCAR driver than Dale SR? He won more races? Earnhardt is only #8 on all time victories with 76 wins. Granted his career was cut short but there is no way he would have made it to the 200 Petty won. So who was the better driver? Jeff Gordon won on 24 of the 25 tracks,(and had more career wins) SR won only 17 of 26, So by wins Gordon was the better driver---do you believe that????

I’ve never understood the whole “golf needs tiger; tiger is so good for golf” mindset. Golf was just fine before tiger came along. To me it’s kinda like saying country music needs Luke Bryan and the like.

He is good for golf in many ways and anyone in the golf industry with intelligence knows it.

TV ratings for the Tour C'ship haven't been as high in the last five years, at least, as they were this weekend. Sales of gear will increase and have since he returned. They declined when he was gone. Part of that can be attributed to the recession but not all of it. The correlation between Woods and "the game" is absolutely real.

When Michael Jordan left the NBA (I think he was suspended for gambling), the TV ratings, ticket sales and other associated sales suffered. It happens with every sport.

I was at East Lake this weekend for the tournament. The excitement began building Friday, as did the crowds. I've been seven times and this was the most electric with the biggest crowds. Even when he was in the tournament previously the crowds weren't as big as Friday through Sunday. I have specific spots I go to and can see fairways and greens, and watching the mass of people moving around, following his group, moving a hole ahead to get close to a green or tee, was remarkable.

On Sunday the entire course was on fire. I followed Mickelson, Keegan, Bradley, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Brooks Koepka, Molinari, Na and Cantlay for a few hours on the back nine. If you know anything about golf then you know how many major titles are among those guys. And there was hardly anyone with them. The crowds on the tees and greens from 14 to 18 were larger than usual 2+ hours before Woods even hit the back nine because they wanted to hold a spot.

People can hate him because he's black, a lying adulterer, was an asshole to a lot of people when he was winning, because he dates white women or whatever. There's a lot of hate for him. I personally think he's a POS for what he did to his family with his adultery.

But purely from an athletic stanpoint I hate to see any athletes injured and it affect or end their careers. To see them return to compete regularly with, hold their own with and beat the best in the world - which is what the PGA Tour is - then IMO that's pretty cool. And it definitely will help the game.

Additionally, there also are A LOT of homers among the fans and golf media who are wetting their pants because they believe he's now going to win a bazillion more majors and tournaments. I don't believe he'll win another major. More tournaments, perhaps. Everything clicked this week at East Lake and he played great. Whether he can continue to play that way consistenly is yet to be seen.

I am not equipped to the judge the man. Had to take guts to come back and win.

Intelligence has never been my strong suit, but......... sure he’s good for the PGA and his sponsors. He makes them money. I don’t care how many white women he gets with but I don’t care for his antics on the course and the way he interracted with fans. So you enjoyed fighting bigger crowds this past weekend? That sounds less appealing to me. Kinda like saying that “Duck Dynasty” was good for duck hunting. If it helped you sell a bunch of stuff sure; otherwise not so much.
I don’t think a guy that throws tantrums and shouts at the gallery should be the face of professional golf.

I'm about to display my lack of intelligence. How much have courses changed when Jack Arnie Player Watson were doing their thing? Say mid60's on. I understand golfs 95% mental but physically the games the same.

Only hits count.

If you have watched him this year; that is not his current demeanor. I believe life has humbled him

Technology wise they are light years ahead. Course wise? They are much much longer than they used to be. I think East Lake plays around 7700 yards for the pros.

Courses are better today IMO due to more knowledge about agronomy, different strains of grass, knowledge about things like shade and micro-climates, watering and so forth. Obviously the ball and clubs are different and better. Players are more tuned into their fitness and how, IMO, the clubs and balls react.

But you still have to lace it and feather it and knock it in the cup while dealing with mental demons that hate you and the game.

I don't care for that kind of stuff, either. If he'd acted like he does now back when he was dominating, he'd probably have fewer haters but maybe IMO fewer wins, too. I don't believe he'll ever win the Payne Stewart Award or any other humanitarian "he's a really great guy, always has been!" awards.

But falling hard (by his own doing) and being humbled, and I think he is now, has a way of changing some folks. And even if he never wins again, he'll be able to say that at least once he was able to put it all together and beat the other top 29 guys from the season and some of the best in the world.

And if he humbles himself I’m all for him. I’m all about second chances and it makes for a good story. Not possible to say this without sounding halfway racist but it would be wonderful if there were more role models for young black kids.
