This story starts last Tuesday. I have been so busy with the kids and work I haven’t got to hunt a whole lot. I was off Tuesday so I headed out to hunt the afternoon about 2:00. I’m usually a bow hunter only but the freezer was empty and our does days ran out January first so I thought I would take the rifle instead and hunt a two year old 40 acre clear cut. Little after 4:00pm I could hear what I thought was two bucks fighting . Sure enough it was. I spotted them about 100 yards across the property line in another clear cut. I watched through the binoculars for 30 minutes these bucks trying to kill each other. I could tell one was a decent 7 point. Darkness fell with no shot opportunities.

Wednesday afternoon I slip out of work litte early and make it to the clear cut about 3:45. I did not see a deer till about 4:30. I caught movement that looked like horns and sure enough it was that 7 point again. I shuffle around trying to pick out holes to shoot through but no luck.
I was busy working Thursday so didn’t make it back to my spot.

Friday morning I head in with just enough light I could see to shoot. I didn’t want to jump something on the way in and not be able to shoot. Well sure enough I make it about 10 yards into the clear cut and jump up a buck and doe. I knew right off it was the 7 point but didn’t offer a shot. I quickly moved on to my spot to get set up just in case he circled back. I had been settled in about 20 minutes when I heard lots of steps coming quickly down the edge of the cut from the way the 7 point went with his doe. I swing around to get ready. 3 coyotes appeared. As I flipped the safety to shoot one I catch movement out of the corner of my eye. HORNS!!! The coyotes didn’t realize they pushed him back to me. So I swing my crosshairs on him waiting and hoping for an opening. I stay in the most uncomfortable position sitting on my heals for an hour waiting and praying to the good lord that my ankles are not broken cause at this point they are asleep and I can’t feel anything from my knees down.
While waiting on a shot I have lots of action happening behind me. Three smaller racked bucks are chasing four does all over this clear cut. Could have kill everyone of them but I wanted this 7 point bad. Two hours have past now and the 7 point is still in some thick stuff almost exactly where I jumped him on the walk in. Pretty sure he is bedded down with his doe. He eventually gets up and starts making a move and so do I. I get propped up on my shooting stick and get ready as we works toward an opening. The doe breaks and so does he as they blow through my only shooting lane. He chases her around some brush piles and they disappear. I wait till 11:00 and ease up to where he was bedded and sure enough I find several beds that look like they are used regularly. I tell my self that he will be back cause this is his home no doubt.
Friday afternoon is quite. See couple of does and one small eight that I decide to pass up on. Right before last shoot light just over the property line I see a buck. Yep you guessed it. The 7 point and he is on a mission going deeper into the neighbors property.

Saturday morning I decided to go sit right out in the middle of the clear cut next to a brush pile. The morning is dead till about 11:00 when I hear three grunts. A doe is moving on pretty good. I throw my gun up to get ready. And sure enough the 7 point comes right from where she did moving a mach speeds. I stand up trying my best to get on him. At this point I am frustrated. I can’t really complain cause I have got to see this deer for a fourth time. I sit till 1:00 seeing another smaller buck cruising along and couple more does.
Saturday afternoon I slip back in about 3:00. Same story. 7 point comes cruising through right on the edge with no shot. I am disgusted. I figured that was it. With this cold air moving in the deer will probably lock down.

Sunday morning I get called into work about 6:00am and don’t make it back home till 9:00. My bunch was still asleep. So grabbed the rifle, insulated boot covers and my light weight fleece sleeping bag and head to the clear cut. It’s cold as I get settled in about 10:00. I sit will 1:30 with no deer in site. Took the family out for dinner Sunday evening so didn’t hunt.

January 1st
Monday morning I get call into work again as my alarm goes off to go hunt. I make it home about 9:00 jump in the Tahoe and head to the clear cut. I step up to the edge and glass for a few minutes thinking I’m crazy it’s 15 degrees out hear. I decide to walk little farther just to see if he is in his bed. Climb up on a brush pile glassing. I throw a good size stick with no luck of getting something up. I slowly walk back to the first spot trying to get a game plan in my head on how to kill this deer.
As I’m looking down the main skid road that came up to where I was standing and thought man that sure looks like a deer. I throw my rifle up to see real quick. ITS HIM!!! I flip the safety and pull the trigger. Dirt flys behind him he whirls and runs. I get to where I can see better but don’t see him. I think, dang I missed. I knew it was at least 200 yards to where he was standing cause I had ranged that area earlier in the week. So I walk of shame down to where he was standing just Incase of a miracle. No blood no nothing. Just a flipped over rock from where he was standing. I decided to walk the way he went down a trail. I couldn’t believe my eyes!!! There he laid. I thanked the good lord and signed a breath of relief. What a roller coaster ride it was.
