From on of the kits. I'm thinking about buying one for myself and getting dad one for christmas as an after dark winter kind of project. Anyone suggestions on a kit to look at? It doesn't have to be anything super fancy

Never built one, but I think all the kits I've ever seen were CVA. My first wife's father built a Kentucky Long Rifle one winter when they lived in Indiana. He carved the stock out of a maple 2x4 and made all the parts except the barrel himself...absolutely gorgeous rifle! That thing was about 5' long, but very well balanced...when you shouldered it, it felt like you could hold it there all day.

Quit laughing...I think I broke something.

Fifteen is my limit on Schnitzen-Gruben, Baby...

I have OCD and ADD, so everything has to be perfect, but only for a minute.

Most of the ones I seem to find are traditions kits

Jim Kibler makes a very nice Southern mountain flintlock kit. It's not cheap. I got one last year and it is very easy to put together and finish. It's a great gun.

I built a TC Hawken 50 Cal. about 40 years ago. The wife gave it to me for Christmas the first year we were married. It was fun to build and I have killed deer with it.

Grandma said...Always keep a gun close at hand, you just never know when you might run across some varmint that needs killing...

I built a couple as a kid. Not very hard and a lot of fun. The more time you spend on them the better they look.
