Cool Video
Average Fawn is 80 pounds...... According to New York Times
No way, some don't weigh that much at a year old. That the NYT would publish that is more amazing than an eagle taking a fawn. How could anyone be that dumb? And even worse, how could anyone that dumb hold a job of any kind. I don't think there is a trustworthy news service left on earth.

I watched a Golden Eagle try to take a fawn in Hale Co after a very steep fast dive. The fawn sidestepped at the last second after the eagle had committed.

It was the New York Post, not the NYT. It doesn't take much effort to find out info like that, though, with a quick search for the NY DEP. But the news media in NYC typically doesn't think of things like actually going to the state conservation department and instead usually would contact a "rescue" organization.
Some of the comments on the video posts are comedy gold. People actually are like "I'd have scared off the eagle, poor thing got drowned!"
OK, yeah, go try to scare away a bald eagle from a meal. SMH. The friggin' Disney-Bambi "oh, let's save all the babies!" bullchit is just unbelievable.

Some of y'all need to understand what a fawn is. It isn't a yearling like many think. You should also understand the weight differences between southern and northern deer. An 11 mos. old deer is still a fawn and to weigh 80 lbs. up north, is probably not inconceivable.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

You know, most things that you say on here are helpful and make sense, but that statement there?? Were you drunk or just spouted off at the mouth, or do you really think that??? That's just sick!!!!!!!!!

I hate hawks, ospreys, eagles or anything with talons. Reminds me of a cat with wings. If you've been around long enough you know I hate cats. Sooooo a cat with wings. I'm out. And yes I was stone sober and am now. Is there a reason I should like them?

An 11 mos. old deer is still a fawn and to weigh 80 lbs. up north, is probably not inconceivable. Good point, and maybe I was too hard on the reporter. You made me look up the dictionary definition of fawn, and some places do indeed define it as deer less than a year old. But other places say a deer that hasn't been weaned, and I think that would be the way most of us understand the term. I would think it unusual for anyone I've hunted with to refer to a deer out of spots as a fawn. Anyone I've ever hunted with that killed a 6 month old deer called it either a doe or a button buck. But even using the definition that a deer under a year old is a fawn, it's nowhere close to accurate to say that "the average weight of a fawn is 80 lbs.". If you are gonna declare an average weight, you would have to add up the daily, or weekly, or monthly weights of the deer and the divide by the number of units you are using to determine a reasonably accurate average weight of a "fawn." There ain't nowhere in the USA that figure would be close to 80 lbs. I thought the reporter included that figure just to sensationalize the video, and it didn't really need that; video was interesting as it was. But maybe I was too harsh on the reporter. I couldn't tell from the video how old the deer was that the eagle killed. If it was a recent video, and the deer was born this summer, then it didn't weigh anywhere close to 80 lbs. If it was born last summer, then it might have indeed weighed 80 lbs, but it doesn't meet anyone's definition of a fawn. They don't have a February rut in Yankee Land. My apologies if I misled anyone.

Sure it was sensationalized, but that is what reporters do these days. The absolute truth is irrelevant anymore. Most people, and I'm as guilty as anyone, incorrectly refer to fawns without spots as yearlings. I do get it right however on observation or data sheets for DCNR.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
