If you're not gonna be pulling a lot of weight often, look at a 1/2 ton Dodge with the V6 eco diesel. I work with a feller has one , 30 MPGs .

Last time I checked the eco diesel was rated for less towing than the same truck with a gas engine.

My $.02 is that Ford hasn't had a good reliable Diesel engine since the 7.3. The Cummins is a strong motor, but the truck will fall apart around it. I drive a ram 1500 as a company truck and they are junk. Many electronic issues, body is extremely thin metal and dents easy

The EcoDiesel is all about 30 mpgs.

My stepdad is a big time mechanic in georgia...the Ford's will flat out run but he works on more does diesels than others. Chevrolet are a good truck. I've had a few and so has he. He drives a dodge now because he doesn't work on nearly as many dodge diesels as Chevrolet or does. Plus he said when he does it's mostly little stuff. He hasn't had to fix one aisin tranny in the dodge and he very said he puts 4 to 1 when it comes to injector between dodge and others. That's why I went with a dodge over Ford or Chevy. Really though he can't go wrong with any of them. I would go dodge or Chevy though in my opinion. The dodge isn't near as quick as the Ford or chevy...but I'm not racing my truck. Once they are programmed that's a differnt story. Not to mention my 15 3500 on the interstate averages close to 21 running 75-80 and it's a mega cab. It's overall average is 18.9 with half and half city and interstate driving and it's gone stock right now...but not for long.

I'm strongly considering trading my Chevy 1500 in for one of these. Seems like a good deal, but I'm totally new to the diesel game.

Hard to beat a duramax and Allison transmission. I drive a LTZ 2500HD with the LML duramax for my personal truck and running around looking at and bidding jobs. I work it a little, pulling burning rigs, skid steers, and smaller tractors, maybe around 14k or 16k lbs with trailer at the most. I have a 3500HD for my work tuck. Got 2 dozers I move around with it, deere 650j( 20,500ish lbs) and a
cat D5k2(22,000ish lbs). Sometimes I'll have a root rake on the trailer as well or 3, maybe 4 fourwheelers during burning season. The truck has an aluminum flat bed with a 30gal air compressor, montezuma tool box full of tools, and 100 gallon off road fuel tank on it. Usually with truck, trailer, and a dozer that duramax and Allison transmission is moving 40,000-43,000 lbs, and I'll do that several days a week, when I'm burning maybe everyday. I've never owned a Dodge or Ford, not saying I never will but for now I'm gonna stick with Chevy or GMC.

Actually it's more due to price and the capacity of dodge trucks.

IMO In the new diesel market every manufacturer builds a junk truck now and then. I would say any of the three would get the job done just fine. It's the new emissions crap you should be concerned about and is something that causes a lot of issues in all of the big threes trucks. If you get a new duramax they have not been able to crack the computer yet where you could delete the emissions and add a tuner. The fords they have cracked it and same with dodge. But also (IMO) the dodge transmissions are not very good. Look up cotontop3 on YouTube to see real world experiences with the Aisin transmission.

Test drive all three and make your decisions based off dealer support and how you like the truck itself. Good luck

Also some food for thought it whenever I see fords towing it always seem they squat a lot more than similarly loaded duramaxs. Shows in a lot of the towing tests too. I think it's because of how they have the rear springs setup

I have owned a dodge Cummings (04) and a ford 7.3 (01) so my information is somewhat dated. I had a 6-speed in the dodge and an auto in the ford. I would get 20-21 in the dodge with 35's if I stayed under 72 mph. I loved that truck and hate I sold it. In my opinion it was better than my ford. But my company gives me a nice truck so I no longer need a nice personal ride.

All of our company trucks are chevys and electrical problems and front end problems are pretty common. They never seem to stay aligned very long

This is true. I was setting at the camp ground the other day and was looking at about 30 campers in a line. I got to looking at the trucks pulling them. Couple fords a chevy a tundra and the rest were dodges. Mostly 3/4 or 1 ton but a few half tons also with smaller campers.

I thought maybe it was just there, but I've been watching everywhere we go and it seems the camper crowd is on the same page as hot shot guys.

Another vote for Dodge with a Cummins. Both my Dad and myself have Ram 2500 4x4 diesels, Dad has a 2005 and I have 2016. If you haul/pull, the Cummins is the way to go. The problems on Dad's truck were few over the years, but biggest were a bad a/c compressor and a broken fuel line. Both replaced under warranty. Dad's has a chip/tuner and it pulls like a freakin' beast. No issues with mine, pulls great and mileage runs about 19 combined city/highway.

My Dad has a new duramax 4x4 dually and worked it hard with no problems. Rode great and could pull the house. I cant speak on the newer diesels today but there is a reason I still own my 1997 12 valve and owned it for many many years. I put her in retirement 3 times, and she is back strong on the road today. I would never sell her, and it will run with the big boys old school style and pull a house and snatch up another house when shifted into third. Guy named her freight train and it stuck...have a number of mods on her, easy to work on and maintain with emissions crap, and provides that real cummins feel behind the feel...it will growl in granny gear and the sound is like no other...she's is somewhat loud and ready to roll all the time. You probably need a new truck though...but if not, find a good 12 valve and fix it up.
