I'm going to OK with a group in a couple of weeks and thought I might go early and try a short hunt in the TX panhandle. Anyone ever hunted with Huselby Creek, or Salt Forks, and willing to share your experience?

I would really appreciate a pm if any of you have ever hunted with either of them.

I went on a hunt near Spur Texas about 8 years ago with an outfitter
but I can't remember the name. They had a lot of turkeys.
I will ask the guys I went with for the name tonight.

I'm packing for a Texas trip now. We leave early Wednesday and will hunt
Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

I'm fired up.

Thanks and good luck to you also.

I'm very fortunate to be invited to a large private ranch every year out there.

Salt Fork has lots of turkeys, over feeders.

So do they make you hunt over a feeder? I think just about everybody in TX feeds; some of them put you out at a blind watching a feeder and make you stay there. Obviously, I ain't interested in that. Thanks for the info.

We only had 2 days to hunt TX after working our way down from Nebraska and Oklahoma. Hunted a different private property on day 1 and me and my buddy both killed the only 2 birds we heard/saw. We ran into the Salt Fork owner at the restaurant and since we only had 1 day to hunt, I offered him $100 trespass fee and we would pay $250/bird if we killed. He has at least 4 giant roosts with 50-200 gobblers on them and it puts his hunters at least a half section away from the roosts. Me and my buddy had a half section we could roam and the property had 3-4 timed feeders. The birds went to the river from the roosts, then worked their way back to the feeders. If we would've sat still in a feeder, we could've killed our 2 birds. We didn't, so we killed zero. Big storm came around 10 am and we got out of there. He has birds, you'd have to call and ask about how much range you would get to roam.

I hunted in that Panhandle along the Red River and the Salt Fork there OCP .

We hunted big wheat fields, pastures and things though. Tons of gobblers..great big wheat fields...lots of fun.

I like the Panhandle. Our guide didnt run any feeders..his family just raised cows there and farmed. Pretty country with big old roosts loaded with gobblers.

Dang that sucks Casey!

We hunted with Creed Akers and his wife..but they closed up shop and moved to dallas with her work last I heard.

His family had great land. Big deer too.

Heck..he didnt even wake up..just showed me the land and let me go. Was great hunting..stayed with him and met his dad and all...great folks. They sponsored our first show too. We deer hunted there too. No feeders..spot and stalk in oat and PEANUT fields.

A lot different from South or West Texas.

I checked on that outfitter and got a bad report.

Seems like he's become shady.

Look up No Cull Outfitters. Won't find a cheaper Turkey trip than those guys. They have plenty of Toms. Randy McBrayer is a good guy. He invited me down at the end of the month, but just can't get away. I'll go this Deer Season. Tell him Derrick Teague sent you and he will take care of you. I can get contact info for anyone needing it

Thanks for the additional info. No Cull sounds good, but he is too far away from the area in OK I'm going to hunt. I'm not gonna get out of the panhandle.

I talked to Huselby and the recent fire forced him to cancel turkey season. He said it not only burned up the habitat, but killed a bunch of birds too.

I also talked to the other guy. He is an old Ag teacher like me, so we had a lot to talk about. Sounds like he's got roosts and feeder and not a lot else, I guess I will try it; thanks for all the info.
