After riding down 65 from Nashville yesterday, I think I may quit complaining about the hilly terrain I hunt. You guys that hunt up north of Birmingham would laugh at the hills I have to traverse!! Looks like It would be fun (once)to hunt off one of those big rocks looking down on a ledge though.

On second thought, I'm sure once turkey season gets here I'll be complaining again!! But it's good exercise I guess!!

All along 65 South of Nashville all the way to the coast is gentle hills as I remember . The real hills are in the Northeast quadrant of the state. You are correct, if you hit the mountains and cover ground in Turkey season , hunt a lot, you WILL be in better shape at the end than when you started.

Act there are some deep hollers up that way, some of which if I had to drag it out I wouldn't shoot a world record deer..

I've pulled some out of some awfully steep places that were way short of the world record. I was younger then, I tend to have an extraction plan before I shoot now.

I probably wouldn't have thought twice about doing it 20 years ago, now, not so much...

Holler at me when you are climbing around at 11-12k feet with your pack and rifle on your back.

Been there, done that, New Mexico Elk hunting. I did after day one leave the backpack at camp and travel lighter. We got up to the black timber, I think that's about 11-12K feet. The thin air is a killer when you get up that high.

These mtns have saved many bucks life due to the drag that would follow. When I take someone with me the last thing I say is make sure he's worth the drag.

You got it Pal. If someone goes with me that isn't keen on the area, I tell them to make absolutely sure to not wound , make a clean killing shot. Our place has some very steep hollows, some of the steepest I've been in, and the timber was cut about 10 years ago so it's very thick in places. Not a pleasant place to be chasing a wounded deer all day or night, then if you find him the real fun begins. Most of my stands I can get my old Toyota or a 4X4 4 wheeler close so a DRT is as easy as it gets in this area.
